Guardiola admits Sterling is important for City

Manchester has been ruling the Premier League under Pep Guardiola this season. They are currently leading the table with 81 points and with 8 matches left, they are well on their way to lift the trophy. Guardiola has been praised for players improvement and particularly Raheem Sterling who is having his best season ever.

Sterling has been massive for City. He has flourished under Pep and has scored 20 goals in all competitions for the club, his personal best. He has been impressive for his national team England too during recent international break.

Though Sterling still has two years left in his contract, Pep wants him to sign a new one as he knows the pacy winger could attract the attention of rival clubs. With teammates Kevin De Bruyne, David Silva, Fernandinho and Nicolas Otamendi already rewarded with new contracts, Sterling is keen to commence talks about fresh contract.

Speaking ahead of Saturday’s trip to Everton, Guardiola maintained the matter was one for director of football Txiki Begiristain but underlined Sterling’s importance to the City cause following recent speculation of interest from Real Madrid.

“In terms of contracts I am not the guy. Txiki is talking about that,” he said

“No doubt, it is so important [City keep Sterling]. But the deals are the deals. The agents, circumstances, maybe other clubs are interested in him.

“So anything can happen but he knows how important he is for us.”

Manchester City signed the 23 year old from rivals Liverpool for a fee around £49 million, signing a 5 year contract in 2015.
