10 Highest Scoring Games in The Premier League

I know everyone is probably missing Premier League football, but fear not, today we are going to be looking back at some instant classics as we look at the top-10 highest scoring games in England’s top division.

The new campaign is only over a month and a half away, but until then, it’s time to reflect and SillySeason will now take you back to matches that simply couldn’t stop gifting goals.

Defensive howlers or just attacking masterclasses, lets look back at the ten highest scoring games in the Premier League, starting with a nine goal thriller.

10. Blackburn Rovers 7-2 Sheffield Wednesday

Back in the 1997/1998 season, Ewood Park was treated to a nine-goal thriller as Blackburn Rovers thumped Sheffield Wednesday 7-2.

26th August 1997 was the day and the hosts were 5-1 up at half-time thanks to some incredible football and finishing in front of goal.

Kevin Gallagher netted a brace, Graham Hyde scored an own goal for Wednesday, Jason Wilcox and Lars Bohinen scored, whilst Chris Sutton also bagged himself two goals.

Both teams are now in the Championship, which is England’s second division.

9. Southampton 6-3 Manchester United

Yes you read that right. Manchester United lost 6-3.

In the 1996/1997 season, Saints stormed past Sir Alex Ferguson’s men and were only 3-1 up at half-time, meaning the second-half was an absolute goal-fest.

Both teams now in the Premier League, with United the all-time Premier League leaders in terms of points and trophies.

8. Manchester United 9-0 Ipswich Town

A few months before United were thumped by Southampton, they dished out their own annihilation on Ipswich Town.

In 1995, The Red Devils put nine, yes NINE, past Ipswich without response making it the biggest wins in Premier League history, however, it’s not the game with the most goals.

This game will be remembered for Andy Cole scoring five of the nine goals.

United still in the Premier League, whilst Ipswich Town are in the Championship.

7. Norwich City 4-5 Southampton

If you score four at home, you usually would expect to be celebrating all-three points.

However, The Canaries left Carrow Road with no points after conceding five in a nine-goal epic.

A Chris Sutton brace for City was not enough as a Matt Le Tissier hat-trick stole the show and also stole all three-points

The two teams will meet again next season after Norwich’s promotion from the Championship

6. West Bromwich Albion 5-5 Manchester United

It was Sir Alex Ferguson’s final game and boy what a send off.

The final game of the season can always stir up some bizarre results and this was one of them. 10 goals split equally five each. Incredible game.

Romelu Lukaku stole the show with an impressive hat-trick, but it’s only good enough for sixth on this list.

However, this result is the most recent in our list, coming in 2013.

5. Arsenal 7-3 Newcastle United

I remember watching this game and just thinking, wow these teams cannot defend.

10 goals scored with SEVEN coming from the home team, Arsenal. The bizarre thing was, it was only 1-1 at half-time.

Eight goals in the second-half at the Emirates Stadium and it was Theo Walcott’s night as he netted an impressive hat-trick. (I remember it well as he was my Fantasy captain that week).

4. Manchester United 8-2 Arsenal

From scoring seven to conceding eight. This was a nightmare day for Arsenal Football Club.

They went to Old Trafford, home of their fierce rivals and they got absolutely battered. Yes you could say it was a weakened Arsenal team, but nevertheless, they were battered and torn apart by Manchester United.

An Ashley Young brace and a Wayne Rooney hat-trick tore The Gunners apart.

United fans will always have this day over Arsenal fans.

3. Tottenham Hotspur 9-1 Wigan Athletic

Jermain Defoe’s day at White Hart Lane.

He scored five goals in a 9-1 thrashing of Wigan Athletic and the ten goals in this game earns themselves a spot in the top-three.

Another crazy fact about this game, it was only 1-0 at half-time.

2. Tottenham Hotspur 6-4 Reading

If number-three was Jermain Defoe’s day for Tottenham Hotspur, number-two is Dimitar Berbatov’s.

The Bulgarian scored four for Spurs in 2007 as they knocked six past Reading, but also conceded four, totaling the game up to a 10-goal thriller.

Another crazy game that kick-started in the second-half as the teams went in level 1-1 at half-time.

Reading have since dropped to the Championship, however, they take top-spot in this list……

1. Portsmouth 7-4 Reading

…..Yes Reading take top-spot as they were involved in an 11-goal thriller.

29 September 2007, Portsmouth beat Reading 7-4. Yes 7-4. Will that ever be beaten??

2-1 at half-time, somehow, somehow, it ended 7-4. What a spectacle that must have been down at Fratton Park.

However, since this game, Reading have dropped down a league, whilst Pompey have dropped down THREE and are now in League Two.

But there you have it. What a list of absolute epic Premier League matches.
