World Cup winner reveals future plans

Defender Benedikt Howedes has revealed he rejected a move to the Emirates and opted to stay with current side Schalke.

The World Cup winner has been strongly linked with a move to Arsenal within the past few months, as a potential replacement of Per Mertesacker.

But Howedes, who has been with the Gelsenkirchen side for 14 years and is now club captain has confirmed he decided to stay in Germany.

Howedes Snubs Move

“I am able to confirm that Arsenal and AC Milan have been really keen on my services,” the 27 year-old said.

“I wouldn’t say that I have chosen against them, but simply that I have decided in favour of Schalke.

“My job here is not yet done and after the disappointment of last season I do not want to leave this way.

“I am a key player of this club and I am staying.”
