Chelsea and Liverpool target Mauro Icardi will not leave Inter Milan in this transfer window.

However, Internzionale hierarchy suggest he could be sold in the summer, in order to compensate losses the club will suffer through failure to qualify for the Champions League.

Roberto Mancini’s side sit ninth in the Serie A table, with qualification of a European competition looking a distant goal.

Both Chelsea and Liverpool were looking to land the Argentine striker this month, but they may have to hold off until the summer transfer window.

Inter’s sporting director Marco Fassone said: “January is no time to make player sales, but at the end of the season it could certainly happen.”

He also added: “We have already planned our spending for the summer. Without the Champions League, some sales may be inevitable.”

Icardi is priced at around £30 million. He has averaged a goal every two games so far this sesason with 11 goals in 22 appearances in all competitions.
