Leroy Sane might have had a strained relationship with Pep Guardiola

Manchester City star Leroy Sane failed to make it to Germany’s  World Cup squad and was frozen out of the first-team by manager Pep Guardiola at the start of the current season. However, he has been performing at the peak of his powers ever since he has been restored to the starting eleven.

Sane’s current contract runs till the end of 2021 but the Citizens want to renew his contract to keep him at the club for the foreseeable future. Raheem Sterling, Sergio Aguero, Kevin De Bruyne, Ederson, Gabriel Jesus, Nicolas Otamendi, David Silva and Fernandinho have all put pen to paper in the last 13 months and the club wants Sane to follow suit.

However, Sky Sports man Dharmesh Sheth believes all might not have been so rosy at the Etihad.

“They have been in talks with Leroy Sane since October. It’s a really weird situation,” he told the Transfer Talk podcast.

“He had the issues with Germany where he didn’t get in the squad then he wasn’t getting in the Manchester City team.

“I don’t know if something had happened between him and Pep Guardiola but he’s forced his way into the team and his assist record is off the chain at the moment.

“There have been talks with Sane since October. Guardiola says the talks are going well and that Sane says he feels at home at the Etihad Stadium.

“It’s quite in keeping with what City are doing at the moment. They have been working hard to tie down nearly the entire squad.

“Nine first-team players – Phil Foden, Sergio Aguero, Raheem Sterling, Kevin de Bruyne, Ederson, Gabriel Jesus, Nicolas Otamendi, Fernandinho, David Silva – that is some nine, they’ve all renewed their contracts in the last 13 months.

“You’d have to say it’s very clever business on City’s side, making sure their key players who they want to keep will be at the club for the foreseeable future.”
