England manager Roy Hodgson has admitted that his experiment went wrong last night, but also believes some lessons were learnt.

The hosts were stunned by South American side Chile last night at Wembley thanks to a brace from FC Barcelona star Alexis Sanchez, and after the game, Hodgson admitted that lessons were learnt from their decisions.

“There were good lessons for us to learn. We gave players a chance to play for England,” he said.

“I can’t talk away or explain away a defeat which I thought came to a Chile side who played very well. It’s not all doom and gloom. It’s how you deal with defeats and we’ll retain a sense of perspective.”

Last night saw debuts for Celtic shot-stopper Fraser Forster, as well as Southampton pair Jay Rodriguez and Adam Lallana.
