Liverpool put themselves to top of the Premier League this afternoon after beating Tottenham Hotspur 4-0 at Anfield. They got off to a flying start when a gift of an own goal from Younes Kaboul gave them the lead in the 1st minute, before another mistake from substitute Michael Dawson allowed Luis Suarez to get his 29th Premier League goal of the season to make it 2-0 before half time.

Phillipe Coutinho then made it 3-0 shortly after the break, before a wide positioned free kick from Jordan Henderson seemed to miss everyone out in the box and end up in the back of the net, rounding off a great day for Liverpool.

Liverpool will feel that they could have had quite a few more with the chances they had, with Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris making a glorious save to deny Luis Suarez a second goal while the game was at 2-0, while Jordan Henderson missed a sitter before his goal.

Brendan Rodgers spoke to the media after the game,

“To perform like we did from the first minute was immense. We are very confident with how we play. Tottenham have some outstanding players and I hope Tim gets time to put his ideas in place.

“We have won eight games in a row and we will enjoy that. It’s just about going back to work next week and we have a tough game against West Ham next.

“The dream is for our supporters, they want to win the title. It has been a long time but it’s not in my thinking. We just need to prepare and do well and if we do that, we will win games.”

“Today we answered the question about pressure. We like to dominate the ball and you saw that today, the movement, confidence and composure was good. We fight as at team to get the ball back and overall I was very proud of the team.

Liverpool fans will be delighted at the significance of today’s results, combined with other results from the weekend. Manchester City dropped points away at Arsenal, while Chelsea lost to Crystal Palace. These results mean that winning the title is now in Liverpool’s own hands, with two huge crunch matches against both City and Chelsea still to come at Anfield.
