Liverpool are said to be closing in on a move for former Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes, reports the Independent.

Valdes is a free agent this summer having left Barcelona at the end of last season, and of course can be signed outside the transfer window itself.

The 32 year old shot stopper is due to become a Liverpool player next month, with Reds boss Brendan Rodgers keen to give competition to current number one, Simon Mignolet.

And Valdes, who is is recovering from a cruciate ligament injury he sustained in March during a Barcelona League game, with Valdes set to chose Liverpool, ahead of other suitors.

Valdes had previously been linked with French Ligue 1 side Monaco, however a deal at the principality side fell through.
