Liverpool are to open contract talks with Raheem Sterling to try and keep the player at Anfield.

Real Madrid are reportedly keen in signing Sterling, who has rose to prominence over the last two seasons. The player currently earns £30.000 per week and Madrid were hoping to tempt him to Santiago Bernabeu with the lure of a bumper pay rise.

But Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers, still smarting over the loss of Luis Suarez to Barcelona in the summer, is keen to ensure the highly rated Sterling stays at the club. The new contract would see Sterling’s wage more than treble to £100,000 per week.

The real talking point, however, is the reported inclusion of a staggering £60m release clause, which would ensure that any club hoping to sign Sterling would have to stump up almost the same £75m Barca paid for Suarez.
