Liverpool are set to beat their rivals to the signing of William Carvalho from Sporting Lisbon.

The Portuguese midfielder has been on Arsenal’s, Chelsea’s and Manchester United’s radars since the beginning of the season, but with the news that Gerrard will leave the club, Liverpool have now entered the race and are now prepared to meet his release clause.

Carvalho has a £32.6million clause in his contract which means if that sum is offered, the Portuguese club will have to accept the offer.

However, according to some reports in Portugal, Lisbon could be persuaded to do a deal a bit cheaper, with £25m being mentioned.

Liverpool sent scouts out to Lisbon over the weekend so that they could get a glimpse of Carvalho in action and it’s believed they reported back to Brendan Rodgers with positive feedback.
