Lukasz Piszczek retires from international football

Poland defender Lukasz Piszczek announced his retirement from the Poland national football team after an 11-year long international career. Piszczek made his Poland debut in 2007 against Estonia. The Borussia Dortmund man went on to make 65 appearances for the national team, scoring three goals. All of his goals have come in World Cup qualifiers. His first two international goals came against Ukraine and San Marino in the 2014 World Cup qualifiers and his final international goal came against Montenegro in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers.

Since his international debut, the 33-year old played in every single tournament Poland featuring Poland- Euros 2008, 2012, 2016 and the 2018 World Cup. At the World Cup, Piszczek played Poland’s first two matches against Senegal and Colombia. With Poland already out of the tournament, Piszczek was an unused substitute in their final game against Japan.

Piszczek posted a statement on social media that read, “Sometimes you have to make difficult but rational decisions. After long reflections, I did it. My adventure with the national team has come to an end. For 11 years I have always proudly represented Poland in the senior national team. It was a special time. I will always remember it very fondly. I would like to thank the fans for their support, Coaches: Leo Beenhakker, Franciszek Smuda, Waldemar Fornalik and Adam Nawalka, thank you for your trust.”

Lukasz Piszczek is the first player from Poland’s World Cup side to announce his retirement from international football.
