With tensions running high in the stands, City’s in-house Twitter commentary team couldn’t be blamed for lauding the performance of the much-maligned Martin Demichelis, who had been impressive at the back for all of 49 minutes.

However, just two minutes later, the Argentine was exposed against fellow countryman Lionel Messi, and chopped him down when through on goal.

he referee awarded a penalty – despite initial contact coming outside of the box – and sent off Demichelis, prompting City to quickly delete their unfortunately timed praise of the 33-year-old.

After Messi stroked home the penalty, the partisan nature of the City Twitter account went into overdrive and dropped another clanger on 81 minutes after blindly informing fans that a Gerard Pique goal was ‘correctly’ ruled out for offside, when replays show Cesc Fabregas was clearly onside when he was initially fed in and rolled the ball across to the Barca defender.

Dani Alves did eventually finish off City with a well executed strike in the last minute.
