Manchester United legend Teddy Sheringham believes his former club should have signed Mesut Ozil instead of Marouane Fellaini.

Both midfielders were involved in mega-money moves on transfer deadline day, but it was Arsenal that managed to pull of the best signing as they captured Ozil from Real Madrid, whilst United had to settle with bringing in Fellaini from Everton.

The Gunners splashed over £40million on the German international and United spent just under £30million on the Belgium midfielder, but Sheringham believes David Moyes should have tried to sign the Madrid playmaker.

‘Out of Fellaini and Ozil you would really want Ozil to be your playmaker,’ Sheringham told Absolute Radio’s Ian Wright.

‘I think Fellaini is too similar in a way to Michael Carrick, but I love Michael Carrick as a player, he makes things tick.

‘It makes you think, “where is Fellaini going to play?” If you spend 28 million on someone you’d expect them to be playing.’
