Manchester United are stepping up their interest in Atletico Madrid defender Diego Godin, and are set to test the waters with a £16m bid for the Uruguayan.

The defender has a release clause in his contract of £28.5m, so the Red Devils may have to come back with an improved offer.

Premier League rivals Liverpool, who United face this weekend, and Chelsea are also monitoring the situation closely.

United have struggled for consistency this season, both in terms of results and for a consistent starting eleven. Injuries have ravaged the Old Trafford club, particularly in defence.

Manager Louis Van Gaal is set to turn to Godin to strengthen the backline.

Godin joined Atletico in 2010 from fellow Spanish side Villarreal, and has made almost 125 league appearances for the club. He also has 85 caps for Uruguay.
