Manchester United could potentially make a bid for Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho this summer, after it’s reported he’s being scouted by the club.

Carvalho has long been linked with a move to the Premier League, with Liverpool the most recent name mooted as they look for a long-term replacement to Steven Gerrard in midfield.

However, it has now emerged that Louis Van Gaal has ordered his scouts to Lisbon to check his performances for the Portuguese side, with a view to a potential bid.

Portuguese football expert Jan Hagen tweeted: ” Man United had a representative to watch William Carvalho on Saturday. Van Gaal wants weekly reports on the Sporting midfielder.”

With Michael Carrick in the twighlight of his career, a defensive midfielder of Carvalho’s quality is high on Van Gaal’s list of replacements, however he won’t come cheap with a buy-out clause that exceeds £30 million.
