Liverpool and Everton are set to battle it out to sign Argentina international goalkeeper Sergio Romero from Sampdoria.

An Italian newspaper reports that both Merseyside clubs are preparing offers for Romero, after learning Sampdoria are willing to sell.

The 27 year old’s contract at the Serie A outfit runs out at the end of the season.

Liverpool have been on the hunt for a goalkeeper to replace Simon Mignolet since the summer, having been close to signing Victor Valdes.

The Toffees however have been dealt a blow with the news that number 1 ‘keeper Tim Howard is now out for six weeks with a calf injury.

Romero played every minute of Argentina’s run to the final of the 2014 World Cup.
