The defender is out of contract at the end of the current campaign

Per Mertesacker has revealed he will decide whether or not to remain at Arsenal once he has returned from his current injury.

According to reports today, the defender is thinking about his future and whether or not that future involves him still being at the Gunners.

The German’s current contract is due to expire at the end of the current campaign and with no new deal currently on the table, it looks like he might be off on a free come next summer unless Arsene Wenger produces a new contract for him.

What’s worse for the 32-year old is the fact that he can’t currently prove that he deserves a new deal at the club, as he is currently sidelined with a knee injury.

Mustafi performing well in his absence

Up until this current season, Mertesacker has been a first-team regular for the Gunners but this current injury has seen Koscielny and new signing Mustafi step up and perform in his absence.

The newboy has performed well so far and there is a worry that when the German does return, he still might not be able to get gametime.

If that is the case, then the centre-back’s five-year spell at the club might come to an end next summer. The player himself has also refused to rule out a move to another club.
