Friends close to Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho understand that the Portuguese boss was left unhappy by the club’s failure to land Portuguese youngster Renato Sanches.
The Red Devils were widely believed to be the favourites to sign the promising Portugal youngster, who helped his country to their first major trophy by lifting the European Championship trophy in Paris on Sunday night.
However, the club dithered in their approach for the 18-year-old, as former boss Louis Van Gaal made it clear he didn’t want the player at the club, before later being sacked.
It is understood club officials were wary with going ahead with the £28 million signing, in case it made it clear that the Dutchman was set to be axed.
United had scouted Sanches during his time at Benfica, but Bayern Munich stole the march and signed him on May 10, for an initial fee of £28 million, with a potentially staggering £35 million in performance-related add-ons.
Sanches made his full debut for Portugal during the Euros, and Mourinho was keen for his compatriot to already have been at the club before he was officially named the new United boss.
However, the club are now set to spend over £100 million to bring back academy graduate Paul Pogba from Juventus, after the France international left on a free transfer in 2012.
