Who had a good weekend, and who had a bad one in the Premier League? This weekend saw plenty of action and drama to go with it, with the final relegation place still yet to be decided.
So then, here at SillySeason, we have picked out this weekend’s winners, and losers in the Barclays Premier League:
It’s been a good week for:
Leicester City: – The first pick in the list of winners’ over the weekend are Leicester City, who confirmed their survival with a 0-0 stalemate away at Sunderland on Saturday afternoon.
A share of the spoils away at the Black Cats means that Nigel Pearson’s side will be a Premier League team next season, in an amazing turn of events over the last few weeks or so.
The Foxes looked dead and buried, destined to a return back to the Championship after just one season, but a run of six wins in eight games salvaged City, who now sit 14th in the league.
Southampton: – Well, a 6-1 victory in-front of the cameras, what more could you possibly wish for? Southampton enjoyed a fine weekend, overpowering Aston Villa at a sun-kissed St Mary’s on Saturday.
Saido Mane hit a three-minute hat-trick as Ronald Koeman’s side remain in contention for a European place, in what has been a successful inaugural campaign in the hot-seat for the Dutchman.
Shane Long added a brace, with Graziano Pelle volleying in late on into proceedings. Christian Benteke pulled one back for Tim Sherwood’s side, on the stroke of half-time.
Manchester United:- All is back as it seems now at Manchester United isn’t it? back at the top table of the European Elite, having confirmed their place in next seasons’ Champions League.
Following the poor campaign under David Moyes last season, Louis Van Gaal has restored the minimum requirement, and delivered Champions League qualification back to Old Trafford, following an hiatus of a season.
Ander Herrera gave United a 30th minute lead with a driven effort from just inside the area, though Tyler Blackett’s own-goal with eight-minutes remaining left rescued a point for Arsene Wenger’s Gunners’ side.
However, coupled with Liverpool’s defeat to Crystal Palace on Saturday evening, the Red Devils confirmed a place in among the heavyweights of football.
It has been a bad week for:
Hull City: – The Tigers look doomed to the drop following Saturday’s 2-0 defeat away at Totttenham Hotspur.
Second-half strikes from Nacir Chadli and Danny Rose handed the three-points to the Lilywhites, leaving Hull’s top-flight survival hopes, hanging by a thread.
Steve Bruce’s side will be relegated back to the Championship should they fail to get a result against Manchester United, at the KC Stadium on, in what has been a tough week in general for all associated with the Humberside outfit, in a seven days which also saw Jake Livermore suspended by the club, having tested positive for cocaine.
Newcastle United: – It has also been a poor weekend for Hull City’s relegation rivals, Newcastle United, following yet another defeat for John Carver’s side.
Wait, when in recent weeks, has it not been a bad week for the Magpies? Who are currently staring down the barrel of a potential relegation to the second-tier.
The North-East outfit slumped a ninth defeat in ten outings, following a 2-1 defeat away at already relegated Queens Park Rangers, on Saturday afternoon.
Despite initially taking the lead at Loftus Road, courtesy of Emmanuel Riviere’s 24th minute opener, strikes early on after the interval from Matty Phillips and Leroy Fer condemned Newcastle to defeat in West-London.
Newcastle currently reside in 17th position in the Premier League, and host West Ham United in their final game of the league season, next Sunday afternoon, knowing that anything other than three-points could potentially send them down.
