Italian reveals midfield plans he had

Former Chelsea gaffer, Claudio Ranieri, has admitted that he tried to sign Manchester United star, Michael Carrick, while managing the Blues.

The Italian, who has managed 15 clubs so far in his lifetime, led Chelsea into the Champions League having spent four years at Stamford Bridge.

First Abramovich Manager

Ranieri was the first manager to spend millions under Chelsea owner, Roman Abramovich, on players such as Claude Makelele, Joe Cole and Damien Duff in 2003 after signing West Ham United star, Frank Lampard, in 2001.

The 63-year-old has recently been speaking to Sky Sports, and revealed that he wanted to sign Carrick while the England international was playing at Upton Park.

Manager’s Target

He said: “At West Ham, I looked at him [Lampard] and Michael Carrick. I wanted to buy both but it wasn’t possible. So I went for Frank.”
