Toby Alderweireld has lifted the lid from his unsuccessful transfer to Manchester United. The Tottenham Hotspur defender was poised to leave the club this summer but he remained at the club after United failed to agree on a deal with his club.

Jose Mourinho was very keen in bringing a new defender this summer to bolster his defence and had identified the Belgian to plug the leak of his erratic backline. United were prepared to splash in excess of £40m but there was a huge gap in both clubs valuation as Spurs were looking for in the tune of £55m.

Both the clubs remained firm in their stance and the deal failed to materialize. The 29 year old’s current contract is set to expire at the end of the season and all efforts to extend his stay at the club hasn’t been fruitful so far.

He said, “Everyone was saying everywhere that I absolutely wanted to leave Tottenham.

“That’s not true. This summer, I quickly understood Tottenham wanted to keep me. So, I had to battle to get my place back in the team. To be in the first team again is a victory for me.

I just try to help Tottenham as best I can with my qualities. Regarding my future, everything that was said in the press was not right all the time.”
