10 Biggest Winning Margins in The Premier League

Last week we focused on the highest scoring games in Premier League’s history, but today we are going to focus on the biggest winning margins of all-time.

In the previous lost, there were matches like 7-5 and 6-4, but in this list, there will only be utter hammerings ranging from 7-0 to 9-0 and it’s time to see who handed out the hammerings and who were on the wrong end of them.

So without further ado, lets dive into the list of the biggest winning margins during the Premier League era.

10. Arsenal 7-0 Everton

Now there have been many games that have ended with seven goals between them, but we’ve just selected a few to make our top-10 list and the first one comes back during the Highbury days.

Arsenal hammered Everton 7-0 back in 2005 putting them tenth in our list of all-time biggest winning margins.

Goals from; Robin Van Persie, Robert Pires (x2), Edu, Patrick Vieira, Dennis Bergkamp and Mathieu Flamini gave The Gunners the win on the night.

Arsene Wenger’s side scored three in the first half and then four in the second.

9. Manchester City 7-0 Norwich City

Another seven goal margin but this one comes in more recent times.

In 2013, City thumped seven past The Canaries of Norwich City, scoring four in the first-half and three later in the second.

Norwich scored two own-goals on the day and also conceded too; Yaya Toure, Sergio Aguero, Edin Dzeko and Alvaro Negredo.

Another mauling and another 7-0 result.

8. Chelsea 7-0 Stoke City

Yes you guessed it. 7-0 yet again and this time it comes from Stamford Bridge as Chelsea hit seven past Stoke City.

A Salomon Kalou hat-trick stole the show in West London, with Frank Lampard netting a brace and Daniel Sturridge and Florent Malouda also getting on the score-sheet.

After the game, Tony Pulis had this to say about the performance: “They were far the better team, we were lucky to get nil. We had our pants pulled down and our backsides slapped.”

7. Middlesbrough 8-1 Manchester City

Ah what happens before you have money.

Back in 2008, Manchester City were stuffed 8-1 by Middlesbrough, but the two teams have drastically changed since this game.

City are now mega-rich and competing for Premier League titles each season, whilst Boro are in the Championship.

However on this day, it was Middlesbrough who enjoyed the occasion, with Afonso Alves netting a hat-trick and Stewart Downing scoring twice.

Boro were only 2-0 up at half-time as well.

6. Southampton 8-0 Sunderland

The most recent drubbing on our list and it came during last season.

Southampton absolutely battered Sunderland and fired eight, yes eight, past them on a nightmare day for The Black Cats.

It was 3-0 at half-time, but by full-time it was eight for The Saints and it goes down in the records as one of the biggest wins in Premier League history.

However, it’s only sixth on our list, which will come as quite a shock considering there is a eight-goal difference.

To make things worse for Sunderland, they scored three of the goals….

5. Tottenham Hostpur 9-1 Wigan Athletic

In 2009, Spurs put nine past a hopeless Wigan Athletic and stamped their names in the Premier League history books.

Jermain Defoe thoroughly enjoyed his day, scoring five of the nine goals, but it was certainly a match to forget for the Wigan faithful.

What makes this game even more remarkable was that it was only 1-0 at half-time.

Spurs managed to score goals in the; 51st, 54th, 58th, 64th, 69th, 87th, 88th and 94th minute. Incredible.

4. Chelsea 8-0 Wigan Athletic

Sadly for Wigan, they feature yet again on this list and once again lost by an eight-goal margin, this time shipping in eight without reply.

Chelsea were rampant and just couldn’t stop scoring back in 2010 and this was another fine display from The Blues at Stamford Bridge.

In fact, this victory crowned Chelsea as Premier League champions…..not a bad way to do it!

Didier Drogba enjoyed the game, scoring a hat-trick for the hosts, whilst Wigan ended the game with 10-men after a Gary Caldwell sending off.

3. Chelsea 8-0 Aston Villa

Yep, it’s Chelsea again and yep they scored another eight without reply.

This time it came in 2012 when they thumped a helpless Aston Villa, scoring five goals in the second-half to crown yet another stunning victory.

Despite scoring eight, only one place scored more than once and that was Brazilian midfielder Ramires, who managed to bag himself a brace.

Other goalscorers were; Fernando Torres, Eden Hazard, Oscar, David Luiz, Frank Lampard and Branislav Ivanovic.

2. Newcastle 8-0 Sheffield Wednesday

Coming in at second is another eight-goal winning margin, and this time it was Newcastle United hammering Sheffield Wednesday at St James Park back in 1999.

The win came in September and it was actually Newcastle’s first win of that season. Not a bad way to start winning.

Alan Shearer was the man of the moment, scoring five goals, but it was certainly a game to forget for Wednesday.

The Magpies are still in the Premier League, but their opponents on this day are currently in the Championship.

1. Manchester United 9-0 Ipswich Town

Yes you read that correctly. Manchester United 9-0 Ipswich Town.

This is the biggest ever win in the Premier League era and it will take some beating.

It took place in the 1994-1995 season, and it’s yet to be beaten 20-years on. It was another game of goalscoring amazement as Andy Cole netted five times.

Surprisingly the game was only 3-0 at half-time, but the second-half saw Ipswich completely collapse and ship in six more. Ouch.

Many teams struggle at Old Trafford, but not many have shipped in nine without reply. In fact, only Ipswich have…..
