10. Mikel Arteta

Many would wonder why Mikel Arteta has up to now never got a cap for the Spanish National team. As skillful as he may be, Mikel has clearly never matched up to the other midfielders of the Spanish team like Andres Iniesta, Cesc Fabregas, Xabi Alonso and Xabi, and the list goes on. It can be seen that for a player to win a cap for the Spanish team, top-notch performance is to be seen in them but unfortunately for Mikel Arteta, he never makes it better than his competitors.

9. Carlo Cudicini – Italy

Despite the fact that Carlo played for one of the finest teams in football history “Chelsea” and was even voted player of the year of Chelsea F.C, it then becomes surprising to know that Carlo has never been capped for the Italian national team. While at the club, his career was nearly outstanding but was cut short when the Italian’s injury problems arose again. This made it difficult to prove his worth and made way for the newly signed Petr Cech to make it in the first team of Chelsea which of course lowered his chances of being capped by a large margin.

8. Horst Blankenburg – Germany

Host Blankenburg was without doubt one of the best players in his time. Having won the Bundesliga, European Cup, DFB-Pokal and Eredevisie when he played for Ajax and also won the German cup and the UEFA Cup winner’s cup when he played for Hamburger SV. Despite the fact Blankenburg was one of the finest footballers, he was never called up for the Germon national team mostly because he had to compete for the same position as the Legendary player Franz Beckenbauer who was by far a way better player.

7. Dario Hubner – Italy

Playing as a forward is quite challenging especially the striking position. It takes all the best a player can offer to make it but since fellow strikers are doing their very best, it becomes difficult for the non extraordinary strikers to make a cap. Dario was an impressive player but due to the fact that he never played for big teams in the Serie A, which made it difficult for him to win a cap and having competitors like Inzaghi, Del Piero and Totti competing for the same position made Dario’s chance of winning a cap impossible and as such he never got called up.

6. Albert Stubbins – England

The late Albert Stubbins was truly and outstanding English player in his time, having scored 83 goals in 178 appearance during his career and most of his glory arose when he played for Liverpool. Walter Winterbottom who was managing England at that time never quite saw the glory in Albert as he never gave him a chance at National football. Although other Albert’s era had other great players like Rickie Lambert and Danny Ings, its surprising to know that he never won a cap.

5. Paolo Di Canio – Italy

The third Italian to make it on the Top 10 Greatest Uncapped Footballers. During his career, Paolo he made an impressive 500 and scored over 100 goals. Despite playing for great Juventus, Napoli, AC Milan and  Lazio, Canio never got a cap for the Italian National team although he did play for the under-21 side but never for the main team.

4. Jimmy Case – England

Its astonishing to know that Jimmy Case in his time never got a cap for the English National team despite the fact that, Jimmy was an outstanding player during the time he played for Liverpool winning four league titles, three European Cups, one UEFA Cup and the player scored 119 for Liverpool. Bob Paisley the Liverpool manager at that time, was also surprised of the decision and criticized because he thought Case was the one eligible to play in the National team.

3. Mario de Castro – Brazil

Denied by his mother to play football at a young age, Mario de Castro started his career as a senior and as such his career was short but truly magnificent. He scored nearly 200 goals in 100 appearances, a total for his entire career. Mario once won a cap but turned it down knowing that he was going to be a second choice but that shut down his chances of ever getting in the Brazilian National team all the way up to his retirement.

2. Agostino Di Bartolomei – Italy

One of the most significant players of Italian football history, Agostino Di Bartolomei. During his career, Bartolomei managed win three Coppa Italias and one Serie A, his remarkable form and gameplay at Roma was so amazing that the club’s fans had a special way of cheerring for the Italian but it was not enough to impress the Italian manager at the time and so he never won a cap for his National team. Di Bartolomei’s demise was quite touching as he committed suicide due to depression.

1. Bert Trautmann – Germany

And on number 1 of the Top 10 Greatest Uncapped Footballers is the German footballer Bert Trautmann, a top-notch goal keeper and one of the most outstanding players that never won a cap for their countries. He spent 15 years of his career at Manchester City and impressed not only his fellow but fans aswell with his agile reflexes and brave saves, a five star goal keeper without doubt but due to the rule of not picking non-domestic to represent Germany in his time, Trautmann was unable to represent his countries but if he ever did, he would have made greater history.
