Top 10 Highest Scoring Defenders

So Silly Season thought today would be the day we look into the defenders who have scored the most goals in the past decade of football. It can be any competition, any level and in any game, we just want to see what defender has the best eye for goal.  Lets begin at number-10 whis is one of the best goal scoring defenders.

10. Joan Capdevila – 23

Starting off the list of Top 10 Highest Scoring Defenders in The Last 10 Years is Spanish veteran Joan Capdevila, who has scored 23 goals in the last 10 years.

Capdevila is commonly known for his stints in Spain with Deportivo La Coruna and Villarreal as he went on to make well over 100 La Liga appearances for both clubs.

Now 37-years-old, the defender is playing for Belgian Pro League side Lierse SK.

9. Sebastien Puygrenier – 23

Another defender makes the list with 23 goals to his name.

Sebastien Puygrenier is a 33-year-old centre-back, who currently plays in France with Auxerre, but is most known for his spell with Nancy from 2005 until 2008.

He then returned to said club for a second stint from 2012 to 2013.

8. Javi Martinez – 23

Some would class this guy as a midfielder, and some would class him as a defender, but all we know is that he deserves to make our list.

Javi Martinez originally started out as a central-defensive midfielder, but since moving to Bayern Munich, he has filled out at centre-back and made the position his own.

The 26-year-old made his name with Spanish side Athletic Bilbao, before completing his move to Germany back in 2012.

He is still playing for the Bundesliga champions.

7. Marcell Jansen – 24

Another defender who is familiar to you German supporters as it’s Marcell Jansen formerly of Hamburg.

In fact, the 29-year-old has played for Hamburg and also Hamburg II, but is now a free agent after being released by the latter.

As well as playing for Hamburg, Jansen also played in Germany with Bayern Munich and Borussia Monchengladbach.

6. Leighton Baines – 26

The first Premier League player on our list!

Leighton Baines of Everton is known for his set piece wizardry. He usually takes the spot-kicks for the Premier League side, meaning he can add goals to his name quite easily, but he is also known for his brilliant free-kick ability as well.

Baines is a full-back that loves to get forward and will do at any chance.

5. Heiko Westermann – 26

Another Bundesliga player and another one who plays for Hamburg.

Westermann hasn’t ever left Germany throughout his whole career and now at the age of 31, it doesn’t look like he ever will.

The centre-back loves getting forward for set-pieces, and most of his goals came during his spell with Schalke. However, he needs just three more for Hamburg to beat that tally.

4. John Terry – 27

Of course this guy was going to make the list.

Guaranteed at least a few goals a season and it’s Chelsea skipper John Terry.

Commanding at the back, but also domineering up front during corners and free-kicks. Terry is an all-round centre-back and despite his age, some would even say he’s in his peak days thanks to Jose Mourinho’s return.

3. Christian Maggio – 31

Our first Serie A footballer.

Christian Maggio of Napoli plays at right-back and is similar to previously mentioned Leighton Baines as he simply loves to get forward and join the attack.

Another player that’s only ever played in one country, Maggio has had previous spells with; Vicenza, Fiorentina, Treviso and Sampdoria.

2. Naldo – 37

In second place is another Bundesliga defender.

Naldo just misses out on top spot by three goals, but the Wolfsburg defender won’t mind sitting in second place on our top-10 highest scoring defenders of the past decade.

Commonly known for his long-term spell with Werder Bremen, Naldo completed his move to Wolfsburg in 2012 and has been a crucial figure ever since.

So far, he’s netted 15 goals for his new club in the three years he has been there.

1. Sergio Ramos – 40

Finally we have reached our number-one and it’s arguably one of the best defenders in the world.

Sergio Ramos started his career with Sevilla and also started as a right-back. However, since his move to Real Madrid back in 2005, he has slowly developed into a centre-back and has created a formidable partnership with Pepe.

His 40 goals for Real Madrid in the past decade has seen him rise to number-one on our list with his most famous one coming in the dying stages of the Champions League final last season to send the game to extra-time.
