Rolling back the years ahead of the Main Stand opening event

After 20 months of construction, Liverpool will finally open their brand new main stand on Saturday when they host champions Leicester in their first home Premier League game of the season.

Anfield hasn’t always been a fortress for Liverpool, but it has given them some fantastic big results in front of sell-out crowds in the Premier League down the years. Let’s take a look at some of the best.

10) Liverpool 5-0 Aston Villa – 2009

Liverpool had beaten Manchester United at Old Trafford the week before by a massive 4-1 scoreline, and, hungry for a title challenge, went out and thumped Villa the following week at Anfield. Steven Gerrard got a hattrick, while Albert Riera and Dirk Kuyt also got a goal each.

9) Liverpool 4-1 Arsenal – 2006

Liverpool jumped over Arsenal and up to 3rd in the league with this big win, where Peter Crouch scored an impressive hattrick. Crouch turned in Alvaro Arbeloa’s cross to put Liverpool ahead after four minutes, then headed in from Fabio Aurelio’s delivery in the 34th minute. Daniel Agger glanced in another brilliant Aurelio cross on the hour before William Gallas poked in from almost on the line for Arsenal. Crouch then made it a treble with a neat turn and finish after 80 minutes.

8) Liverpool 4-0 Blackburn – 2009

Remembered for an incredible Fernando Torres goal. Torres chests a ball from Jamie Carragher down in the box with his back facing goal, and flicks the ball over his head with his right foot into the far corner of the Anfield Road net. Liverpool dominated a game in a season where they dominated opposition at Anfield.

7) Liverpool 4-0 Everton – 2016

Jurgen Klopp’s first Merseyside derby was a dominant one. Liverpool passed Everton to death as the Blues faced the final days of manager Roberto Martinez. Divock Origi, Mamadou Sakho, Daniel Sturridge and Phillipe Coutinho all got a goal as Liverpool got yet another big win over Everton at Anfield.

6) Liverpool 3-1 Man United – 2011

The easiest hattrick Dirk Kurt will ever score, but also the game that really introduced Luis Suarez as a Liverpool star. The first goal was made completely by the Uruguayan, who’s twisting and turning in the box allowed Kuyt to finally tap in. His freekick was also saved by Edwin van der Sar which allowed Kuyt to get his third. A fantastic result for Liverpool.

5) Liverpool 3-0 Manchester City – 2016

3 days after losing the Capital One Cup final to the same opposition, Liverpool went out and dominated Manuel Pelligrini’s Man City at Anfield, thanks to goals from Adam Lallana, James Milner and Roberto Firmino. It was a game that was almost as impressive as the 4-1 win at the Etihad earlier that season.

4) Liverpool 4-0 Everton – 2014

An incredible first half performance from the Reds saw them 3-0 up by half time thanks to a header from Steven Gerrard and a brace from Daniel Sturridge. Luis Suarez added another in the second half, capitalising on a mistake from Phil Jagielka, and Daniel Sturridge missed a penalty on a night Anfield went crazy.

3) Liverpool 3-2 Man City

It was billed as a title decider, but a later twist in the tale meant that City won the war despite losing this battle. However, this game brought brief ecstasy to the Kop. With Liverpool needing a win to stay in the title race, Raheem Sterling and Martin Skrtel put Liverpool 2-0 up, but tense times came as City pulled it back to 2-2. However, a mistake from Vincent Kompany with 12 minutes to go allowed Phillipe Coutinho to fire home a cool winner and for Anfield to go wild.

2) Liverpool 5-1 Arsenal – 2014

The game where Liverpool blew Arsenal away inside 20 minutes. They were ahead from the off when Martin Skrtel when he got on the end of a 1st minute Steven Gerrard free-kick. Skrtel got another after 9 minutes from a corner, and further goals from Daniel Sturridge and two from Raheem Sterling completed an absolute rout over the league leaders at the time. Stunning.

1) Liverpool 4-3 Newcastle – 1996

One of the best games in Premier League history. With teams still having an outside chance at the title, this game was a must win. Goals from Robbie Fowler, Les Ferdinand, David Ginola and Faustino Asprilla all provided most of the entertainment. But the dramatic goal from Stan Collymore won the game for Liverpool, described by Kevin Keegan as a ‘classic’
