Top-10 Most Successful English Clubs

With the Premier League and the Football League set to start in two weeks time, SillySeason are going to take a step back into the history vault and see who are the most successful clubs in English history.

Some are obvious, some you’d be surprised with, but these clubs can definitely say they have some kind of history, even if it is recent or even if it is ages ago.

We will be taking into considering all kinds of trophy wins, whether it be a league title or a League Cup, they all count and go towards that illustrious honours list.

So no more introduction, it’s time to look into the list of top-10 most successful English football clubs.

Starting with number-10…..

10. Nottingham Forest

Did you expect this?

Nottingham Forest are actually the tenth most successful club in English football because of their history back in the 70s.

Forest, who are now in the Championship, England’s second tier, won nearly all you could win during the 70s and 80s and most of it was down to Brian Clough.

He helped guide the club to numerous trophies and honours during his time there and sadly for Forest, they haven’t seen glory days like it since.

In fact, their last piece of major silverware came in 1992 when they won something known as the Full Members Cup.

However, during the 70s, they won the First Division title, which is now known as the Premier League, they won the League Cup twice, the Charity Shield once, the Champions League twice and the European Super Cup.

Numerous trophies were won prior and after the 70s, but it was that era that was deemed most successful for Nottingham Forest.

9. Newcastle United

Sadly for Newcastle United, they make ninth on this list because they haven’t won anything in recent time.

Their best days came in the 90s when they were battling Manchester United for the Premier League, but sadly for The Magpies, they never managed to win it.

However, if you open up the history books, you will find that Newcastle have won the first division four times! In 1905, 1907, 1909 and 1927.

They’ve also won the second division three times, and the Northern League three times. Once again, all stemming back a long time ago.

Along with their league trophies, Newcastle have won six FA Cups and one Charity Shield.

In Europe, they have also won the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup and the Intertoto Cup.

8. Manchester City

Remember in the into when we said some history is modern? Enter Manchester City.

Yes they had won some trophies way back when, but their recent success is what has put them on the map today.

Two-times Premier League winners, one time FA Cup winners, one time Capital One Cup winners and one time Charity Shield winners all in the past four years.

You would then have to go a long way back until you find other silverware that The Citizens won but after their financial takeover, the success quickly followed.

7. Tottenham Hotspur

Another team that were good a long time ago, but are struggling to win any silverware these days, with their last trophy coming in 2008.

Eight FA Cups however have put them seventh on our list and two league titles back in the 50s and 60s ensures Spurs of their history in the English game.

Tottenham have also won the UEFA Cup on two separate occasions, but the last one came in 1984.

In their history they have recorded two doubles. In 1961 when they won the league and the FA Cup, and then again in 1971 when they won the Anglo-Italian League Cup and the League Cup.

6. Aston Villa

Another team that has honours from the olden days that keeps them in the top-10 most successful English teams list.

Aston Villa have surprisingly seven league titles to their name with the latest one coming in 1981.

Seven FA Cups and five League Cups have also been won by the Midlands club and they could have made it eight FA Cups if they had beaten Arsenal in this year’s final. Sadly for them however, they were thrashed 4-0 in the final.

In 1982 they also won the European Cup.

5. Everton

Everton have won nine first division titles. Did you know that?

However, the most recent one came in 1987 so they are another club who tasted success a long time ago and have since forgotten what it feels like.

Their last trophy came in 1995 and that was when they won the FA Cup. 20 years ago.

4. Chelsea

People like to claim Chelsea have no history, but due to their financial power, they are quite the European force these days.

They have now won four Premier League titles, with their latest coming this season, and they have also won the FA Cup numerous times, the Capital One Cup numerous times, including this year and have also lifted the Charity Shield.

Chelsea’s standout moment though came in 2012 when they lifted the Champions League for the first time in their history.

The following year then lifted the Europa League as well.

3. Arsenal

Entering the top-three and in Bronze place it’s Arsenal.

13 First Division titles, including three Premier League trophies, 12 FA Cups, with the latest coming this year making them the most decorated team in the competition’s history, two League Cups, 13 Charity Shields and one European Cup Winners Cup.

One thing missing for Arsenal? The Champions League.

They came so close in 2006 but lost to FC Barcelona in Paris 2-1 during the final.

2. Liverpool

Runners-up is Liverpool Football Club.

Not winning the Premier League will forever haunt the Merseyside club, but they have won 18 First Division titles which makes them one of the most successful teams in England.

Accompanying their league titles are seven FA Cups, eight League Cups, 15 Charity Shields and one Super Cup.

However, Liverpool’s proud history in the Champions League is what makes them such a special club.

Five-times Champions League winners and three-times UEFA Cup Winners.

They do need to get that Premier League trophy though.

1. Manchester United

Of course. Who else.

Manchester United have just won it all and have done so in dominating fashion.

20 First Division titles, including 13 Premier League titles, 11 FA Cups, four League Cups and 20 Charity Shields.

In Europe, United have successfully won the Champions League/European Cup three-times, just two off their fierce-rivals Liverpool.

No doubting the dominance Manchester United have enjoyed over English football over the years, but with Sir Alex Ferguson finally gone, will they ever have that dominance back?
