Atharva Gosavi

Speaking directly to football newbies, any die-hard fan will tell you that transfer seasons are amongst the best months in a year. Players exchanging clubs for gigantic fees is something every football aficionado loves to follow.

The transfer rumour mill churns out innumerable rumours related to different players, those that keep the fans glued to their phones savouring every last scrap of news that is made public. Transfer sagas end up giving fans happiness beyond measure if they turn out to be true, but also makes them suffer through incomparable agony if they don’t.

While everyone loves to know the amount of money involved in a transfer, here’s a peek to show which players have accumulated the most number of transfer fees in recent times.

10. Gonzalo Higuain – €150m

Gonzalo Higuain may have faced a lot of criticism for his lack of consistency in front of goal, but there’s no denying that he is a pretty awesome striker to have in your team. The numbers that he notched in his stint with Napoli and his initial years with Juventus prove that on his day, the Argentinian is downright unstoppable.

The 31-year-old has played for 6 clubs till date;  River Plate, Real Madrid, Napoli, Juventus, AC Milan and Chelsea. He has fetched a sum of €159m throughout his career. The highest fee he was sold for was €90m – the amount Juventus paid Napoli to sign him.

9. Zlatan Ibrahimovic – €169.10m

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is one of Europe’s most famous journeymen, and above all, a world-beater. The Swede has no shortage of silverware to showcase if you ever get the chance to see his trophy cabinet.

Over the course of his glittering career, Ibra has plied his trade for 10 different clubs, 7 of which have fetched a price of €169.10m. Barcelona paid €69.5m for him when he arrived to the Nou Camp from Inter Milan. That remains the highest sum he has fetched for any club till date.

Now at LA Galaxy, the 36-year-old is still growing strong and trying to achieve new heights, while inching closer to the dying embers of his glorious career.8. Philippe Coutinho – €170.30m

Philippe Coutinho is one of the best playmakers of this generation, regardless of his torrid spell at Barcelona. Now playing for his sixth club in Bayern Munich, the Brazilian has fetched a sum of €170.30m over just four transfers.

Coutinho has made a positive start at Bayern and if he continues to impress in the same vein, he could convince Bayern to shell out a massive amount for him. Barcelona paid €145m to sign him, almost more than three-fourth of the transfer fees he has accumulated till date.

If Bayern do sign him next season, Coutinho is destined to move further up this list.

7. Antoine Greizmann – €174m

Antoine Griezmann has already commenced on his new journey at Barcelona and is already living his dream of playing with Lionel Messi. They may not have signed Neymar this season, but the Blaugrana definitely need not worry about that when they have Grizou on their hands.

Having played for six clubs in his career, the Frenchman has accumulated €174m over just two transfers. Barcelona shelled out €120m to acquire his services – the highest any club has ever spent for his signature.

With Barcelona, Griezmann can finally aim to realise the dream of winning the Champions League given he has already lost the final of the competition on two occasions.6. Angel di Maria – €179m

Argentine playmaker Angel di Maria is currently enjoying his life winning oodles of titles in the French top-tier with Paris Saint Germain. Having won every major trophy there is to win on the club level, he is worth every penny his clubs have spent on him – except for him.

Di Maria has fetched a total of €179m over four transfers and has played for five clubs in his date. Manchester United is the exception we talked about earlier; the Red Devils spent €75m to sign him and made him the most expensive United player back in 2014.

Di Maria, however, failed to produce the expected returns and moved on to PSG following his debut season at Old Trafford. Now at the Parc des Princes, winning the Champions League for a second time remains the biggest target of his remaining career.

6. Alvaro Morata – €179m

Tied with Angel di Maria at the same place his Alvaro Morata, the Spaniard striker who currently plays for Atletico Madrid. The 26-year-old was destined for big things, which is why he has already played for a knot of European heavyweights like Real Madrid, Juventus, Chelsea and now Atletico.

Throughout his career, Morata has played for six clubs and fetched €179m from five of them. Chelsea spent the highest amount to sign him when they forked out €66m to acquire his services from Real Madrid in 2017.

Now with Atletico following a torrid spell with the Blues, Morata faces a new challenge in the light of the departure of Antoine Griezmann – that of scoring loads of goals that win games for the club.4. Kylian Mbappe – €180m

Kylian Mbappe is the man to take the throne as the world’s best footballer following the era of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. He is a future Ballon d’Or winner, and as it happens, also the future most expensive player in the making.

Having played for only two clubs in his career, Mbappe has already accumulated €180m. That figure also underlines the massive potential inside him that will unleash as the years pass by. He is the costliest teenager to date.

Now at Paris Saint Germain, Mbappe is already a World Cup winner and is being looked upon to carry the torch should Neymar leave the club. He could easily give Neymar a tough tussle for the first place should he leave Les Parisiens in the near future.

3. Romelu Lukaku – €203.56m

A surprising addition, albeit a justified one. After joining Inter Milan this summer, Romelu Lukaku has surpassed a bunch of world-class performers to enter into the top three on this list.

Big Rom has played for six clubs in his career till date, fetching a sum of €203.56m for five of those clubs. Manchester United paid the highest amount to sign him, when they splashed €84.7m to get him from Everton in 2017.

Now at Inter Milan, Lukaku is relishing a new challenge following an unsatisfactory stint at Old Trafford and finally working with the manager who wanted to have him the most – Antonio Conte.2. Cristiano Ronaldo – €230m

When it comes to financial lists, Cristiano Ronaldo hardly likes to be left out. The Portuguese ace is one of the two highest earners in the world and also the second-highest footballer to have accumulated transfer fees throughout his career.

Ronaldo has played for four clubs in his trophy-laden career, winning an endless list of personal and professional accolades. He has fetched €230m for three of those clubs. However, that sum seems really puny for the heights of achievements he has scaled till date.

A superhuman and a role model for billions around the globe, Ronaldo is now trying to immortalize himself with a bid to win the sixth Champions League title and a third with a different club.

1. Neymar – €310m

Neymar is a long way off all the players on this list. With a tag of €310m attached to his name, he is out of reach for every player on this list.

The Brazilian sealed a world-record €222m move to Paris Saint Germain in 2017. That amount itself is the reason why he is right on top of everybody else. Earlier Barcelona also spent in the region of €88m to sign him from Santos in 2013.

Had Neymar completed a return to Barcelona this summer, the sum of his transfers would have crossed €500m. That would have made practically impossible for any other player to surpass him on this list.

With great price tag comes greater responsibility, and that is what Neymar is trying to fulfil as he gets ready to take a shot at winning the Champions League for the third time with PSG.
