Which ‘keeper has kept the most clean-sheets in the Premier League?

Another SillySeason Top-10 for the day and this time we will be focusing on the stars in between the sticks. Yes that’s right, time to see who has kept the most clean-sheets in the Premier League era.

Since the formation of the Premier League back in 1992, the competition has seen some of the greatest goalkeepers of all-time. David Seaman, Peter Schmeichel, Petr Cech and many, many more.

But which 10 have made the most clean-sheets in that time?

Well it’s time to find out!

10. Tim Howard   – 122 clean sheets

Starting our list is current-Everton goalkeeper and American international, Tim Howard.

The shot-stopper has made 366 appearances in the Premier League and has kept a grand total 122 clean sheets.

The American started his career in England with Manchester United, but after failing to break into the first-team under Sir Alex Ferguson, he joined Everton, where he’s played ever since.

Howard is still going strong at Goodison Park so could easily add to this already impressive tally.

9. Peter Schmeichel – 129 clean sheets

Arguably the greatest goalkeeper to ever play in England.

Peter Schmeichel was incredible during the 90s with Manchester United, and over his illustrious career, he made 129 clean-sheets.

During his time in England, he played for three Premier League clubs. Manchester United, Manchester City and Aston Villa.

His legacy however continues to this day as his son, Kasper, is currently in goal for Leicester City.

8. Brad Friedel – 132 clean sheets

Brad Friedel has played for four Premier League clubs during his long-serving career. Liverpool, Aston Villa, Blackburn Rovers and ending with Tottenham Hotspur.

Friedel has made 450 appearances in the Premier League and has a total of 132 clean sheets.

The American shot-stopper broke the news earlier this season that he would be retiring from the game at the tender age of 41-years-old.

7. Edwin Van der Saar – 134 clean sheets

Another world-class goalkeeper during his day, and another one that made his name at Manchester United.

Van Der Saar joined Old Trafford from Fulham and then went on to win almost everything you could possibly win in the game.

A total of 134 clean sheets in the top-flight and undoubtedly one of the greatest goalkeepers of all-time.

6. Jose Reina – 134 clean sheets

Although he was known for an error now and again (who isn’t), Pepe Reina was a brilliant servant for Liverpool and during his time there, he made 134 clean-sheets.

After falling down the pecking order after Simon Mignolet‘s arrival, Reina joined Serie A side Napoli on a season-long loan, before then agreeing to join Bayern Munich.

However, with Manuel Neuer their current number-one, game-time is not flattering for the Spaniard.

5. Nigel Martyn – 138 clean sheets

Bit of a goalkeeping veteran now as this guy started his career back in the 80s.

Nigel Martyn is most known for his times at Crystal Palace and Leeds United, where we made 272 and 207 league appearances respectively.

However, he ended his career at Everton in 2006 after spending three years in Merseyside.

Martyn retired due to a serious ankle injury, which saw his clean-sheet tally end at 138.

4. David Seaman – 142 clean sheets

Another goalkeeper who will go down as one of the Premier League greats.

David Seaman was part of the incredible Arsenal side of the late 90s early 00s and during his career, he went on to make 142 clean-sheets.

Despite being an Arsenal legend, Seaman actually ended his career with Manchester City before retiring in 2004.

Some even say Arsenal have failed to replace Seaman to this day.

3. Mark Schwarzer – 152 clean sheets

Another Premier League goalkeeper legend makes third on our list.

Schwarzer has been around since the late 90s, when he played for Middlesbrough, but he built his reputation during his career at Craven Cottage with Fulham.

After making nearly 200 league appearances for the London club, he made a shock free transfer to Chelsea where he played second-fiddle to Petr Cech.

After Thibaut Courtois then returned, Schwarzer was informed he could leave and ended up joining Leicester City.

152 clean-sheets to his name and still counting.

2. Petr  Cech – 168 clean sheets

What a goalkeeper. Petr Cech is up there with Schmeichel and Seaman that’s for sure.

The Chelsea legend has been at the club over a decade, making 333 league appearances and keeping 168 clean-sheets, including 24 during his debut season in England.

Despite falling down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge this season, Cech is still considered one of the best ‘keepers in the league.

The veteran could be set to end his association with Chelsea and he’s linked with a move to London rivals Arsenal.

1. David James   – 170 clean sheets

Number one! Who would have said David James?

Well if you think logically, it does make sense because of the amount of games he has played in England.

Spells at; Liverpool, Aston Villa, West Ham United, Manchester City and Portsmouth, James made well over 400 league appearances during his playing-career.

A whopping 170 clean-sheets during his career makes him our number-one.

However, sitting just two behind is Petr Cech, who is still playing.

I feel James won’t be here for much longer……
