Top 5 Biggest Deadline Day Transfers

Silly Season rounds up the best signings on deadline day. For those of you who have not been following transfer deadline day all day, where have you been?

Jim White has been jumping around like a jack in a box, but in truth it has not been as manic as some would have expected.

5 Best Deadline Day Transfers

We are going to have a look at the top 5 best and worst Deadline Day Transfers. So which are the best Deadline Day Transfers? Fear not however because Silly Season will now bring you the best deals that have been done by Premier League clubs on this summer transfer deadline day.

5. Nathan Dyer- Swansea City to Leicester City (season long loan)

A deal that went through an hour after the deadline, but it could be a very good signing for Leicester.

Dyer had fallen down the pecking order somewhat at the Liberty, with the likes of Montero, Routledge and Andre Ayew keeping him out of Garry Monk’s starting XI.

Marc Albrighton has started the season very well for the Foxes, so Dyer won’t walk straight into Claudio Ranieri’s side.

But his rapid pace will cause defences problems, and his delivery from wide areas will give plenty of chances to Jamie Vardy and Shinji Okazaki.

4. Glenn Murray- Crystal Palace to AFC Bournemouth (£4 million)

Bournemouth needed to add some experience to their youthful looking squad, and Glenn Murray certainly provides that.

Murray suffered a severe injury that ruled him out for Palace’s first season back into the Premier League, but he was a key part of Alan Pardew’s side’s success at the back end of the last campaign, netting some crucial goals.

He will also provide a different option for Eddie Howe, to their free flowing football. His aerial presence will give wingers Matt Ritchie and Max Gradel to target with crosses, and at set pieces.

Callum Wilson has seemlessly carried on from where he left off in the Championship last season, but Howe will hope Murray can chip in with 10 or so goals to help keep the Cherries afloat.

3. Anthony Martial- Monaco to Manchester United (£36 million)

By far the biggest transfer fee splashed out on deadline day was of course Manchester United, and their audacious capture of the yet untried and tested Anthony Martial.

Being just 19 year old, the £36 million pricetag will shock many, but it looks like that’s how clubs, in particular Manchester United operate in this day and age.

Comparisons will be made between Martial’s signing, and that of Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney. Ronaldo was bought to compliment what United had at that time under Sir Alex Ferguson, and was bought for the future.

Same with Rooney, but Martial is expected to start performing and scoring goals straight away.

It is a huge gamble, and the pressure on the young man will be immense. But he’s still got huge potential, and despite the transfer fee, it could be a great signing.

2. Alex Song- Barcelona to West Ham (season long loan)

Everyone was very impressed last season when West Ham snapped up Alex Song on loan, and they have done it again.

Perhaps it will go a little more under the radar, but it shouldn’t be underestimated what a great addition Song is for Slaven Bilic’s side.

The Cameroon international provides strength and power in central midfield, breaks up the game, and will make West Ham even more compact.

The Hammers were the busiest team on deadline day, and pulled off some excellent signings to add to the likes of Dmitri Payet and Miguel Lanzini who have already hit the ground running.

Song will be a big player for them now, home and away.

1. Virgil van Dijk- Celtic to Southampton (£11.5m)

It was the second biggest transfer fee splashed out on deadline day, but it’s a cracking signing for Southampton, and it’s number one on our list.

Having failed to land Toby Alderweireld on a permanent deal from his original loan, the Saints were left without a quality centre back to partner captain Jose Fonte.

But they have certainly got that now with van Dijk joining their ranks, who has been linked with Arsenal in the past.

Van Dijk is a former teammate of Victor Wanyama at Celtic, and with the Kenyan having not moved to Tottenham today, Ronald Koeman will hope he can be get back into the fold with van Dijk also now in the squad.

The player shouldn’t have any problems in adapting to the Premier League, so Southampton will be feeling very happy tonight, especially having kept hold of Wanyama and prized asset Sadio Mane.
