Countries That Have Won The Most World Cups

Now usually SillySeason put together top-10 lists, but sadly today, we have shortened it down to top-8, but that’s because only eight teams have actually won the FIFA World Cup.

A global competition that has been played every four years since it’s first one back in 1930, the World Cup is watched by hundreds of millions across the globe.

The fact that it comes just once every four years makes it that much special, and when it comes around, the whole footballing world gets excited and tunes in.

The last World Cup (Brazil 2014) was one to remember with some stunning matches throughout, including Brazil getting thumped 7-1 by Germany.

So we thought it was time to look back at past winners, and although there has only been eight, it’s still a list filled with talent and stars.

It’s time to take a look into the eight winners of the FIFA World Cup.

8. England – 1 World Cup Trophy

Starting us off is the Three Lions of England. One-time winners of the World Cup, but that came way back in 1966.

England played host to the competition back then and beat fierce-rivals West Germany 4-2 thanks to an incredible hat-trick from Geoff Hurst.

Hurst‘s three goals made him the first ever person to score a hat-trick in a World Cup final, and in fact, to this day he is still the only man to net a hat-trick in the final.

Sadly for England though, that has been their only World Cup success, a mere 49 years ago.

7. France – 1 World Cup Trophy

Seventh on our list is another nation with one World Cup trophy and that is France.

The French won their first and only World Cup back in 1998 when they beat Brazil 3-0 in the final. Just like England, they were hosting the World Cup which they won.

A brace from Zinedine Zidane and a goal from Emmanuel Petit gave the French the trophy at the expense of the Brazilians.

The final is remembered for the controversy surrounding the team-sheets after it was first revealed that Ronaldo wouldn’t be starting for Brazil.

However, it was later dismissed and he did end up starting.

6. Spain – 1 World Cup Trophy

Surprisingly Spain have only won one World Cup and that came back in South Africa 2010.

It came in an era in which they dominated. They won two European Championships either side of the 2010 World Cup, but sadly fell way short in 2014 World Cup, facing elimination during the group stages.

However, back in 2010 and in South Africa, an Andres Iniesta goal was enough to give the Spanish their first ever World Cup trophy after they saw off Netherlands.

5. Uruguay – 2 World Cup Trophies

In fifth it’s Uruguay, who have won the World Cup on two different occasions.

The South American country actually won the first ever World Cup back in 1930 when they thrashed Argentina 4-2 in the final, and their second victory came 20-years later when they beat Brazil 2-1.

Uruguay’s first-win came on home soil, but their second was the biggest shock as they beat Brazil in Brazil.

4. Argentina – 2 World Cup Trophies

Another South American country with two World Cup trophies makes it to fourth on our list.

Argentina lifted the famous trophy in 1978 and 1986 after beating Holland and Germany.

Despite their rich attacking options these days, with Lionel Messi, Gonzalo Higuain and Carlos Tevez to name a few, Argentina haven’t won the trophy since ’86, but came runners-up in 2014 after losing narrowly to Germany.

During their first victory, Argentina beat Holland 3-1 in Argentina, and then in ’86, they beat Germany 3-2 in Mexico.

3. Italy – 4 World Cup Trophies

A whopping four World Cup trophies for European’s Italy.

They were in fact the first nation to retain the World Cup when they won it back-to-back in 1934 and 1938.

They first won it on home soil as they beat Czechoslovakia 2-1, and then the following World Cup in France, they beat Hungary 4-2.

However, they then had to wait until 1982 to win their third World Cup, and that came after they beat Germany 3-1 in Spain.

The fourth and final victory came in 2006 when they beat France 5-3 on penalties in Germany.

Italy have only ever won the competition when it’s been hosted in Europe.

2. Germany – 4 World Cup Trophies

Coming in second place is another team with four World Cup wins and their latest came during the last competition in Brazil.

Germany have lifted the prestigious trophy four times in their history, with the first coming back in 1954 when they beat Hungary 3-2 in Switzerland.

They then won it again in 1974 after beating Holland 2-1 on home soil and then lifted the trophy again in 1990 after seeing off Argentina 1-0 in Italy.

However, they then had to wait 24 years until their next one, but it came in 2014 after they beat Argentina 1-0 thanks to a Mario Gotze winner in Extra-Time.

1. Brazil – 5 World Cup Trophies

Sitting on their perch alone with FIVE World Cup trophies is Brazil.

Arguably the greatest nation to ever feature in the competition due to their riches of talents throughout the years and also because of their winners medals.

Back-to-back World Cup wins in 1958 and 1962 got them on their way, and they then won it eight years later in 1970.

Their fourth came in 1994 after a 24-year wait, and their fifth and final one came in 2002.

In their finals, Brazil have beaten: Sweden, Czechoslovakia, Italy (x2) and Germany.
