Former-Liverpool striker Fernando Torres has revealed that Steven Gerrard encouraged him to complete a £50million move to Chelsea.
The Spaniard caused controversy around Mersyeside after he swapped Anfield for Stamford Bridge back in January 2011, but in a recent interview, he’s revealed that it was the captain that urged him to complete the transfer.
Torres was in red-hot form for Liverpool and created a deadly partnership with Gerrard, but in a recent interview, Torres stated that he had several chats with the skipper about his future, and the midfielder urged him to take the move.
Torres said: “There’s one player that influenced me above anyone else and that’s Gerrard. He changed my career, my ambition, wanting to win, he changed everything.
“Even when I was leaving Liverpool he told me ‘go, think about yourself. Do what’s best for you — you’ve nothing to prove’.
“He changed the way I saw things, telling me that I could get much higher than what I had always thought. I’ll never find a team-mate like him.”
Torres’ career at Chelsea wasn’t a replica of his time at Liverpool and he eventually left The Bridge to join AC Milan before then completing a loan move to boyhood club Atletico Madrid.
