Rumors had suggested that United wanted to capture Coleman in the summer with Marouane Fellaini heading the other way back to Goodison park.
United have also been linked with Fiorentina’s Juan Cuadrado and Juventus star Stephan Lichsteiner in recent weeks.
Van Gaal is said to have Coleman as his preference and is willing to battle Chelsea for the Irishman’s signature. United are looking to engage in talks with Everton very soon over how much they are willing to pay for the defender which is said to be around £25 million.
