Wayne Rooney says he is grateful and honoured to the Football Association for giving him a grand opportunity to bid farewell to his England career.

Rooney is supposed to come on as a substitute in England’s international friendly against the USA. The former Manchester United star joined the rest of the squad at the St George’s Park and has been training with them prior to the match.

Rooney moved to MLS side DC United and has created a furore with his goal scoring skills. The 33 year old single handedly led the side to the playoffs and earned plaudits for his brilliant trickery on the pitch.

Rooney said, “I don’t know how much I’m going to play.

“I’ll speak to [manager] Gareth Southgate and whatever he wants me to play I’m happy to. It’s Gareth’s call.”

“It’s a huge honour for the Football Association to grant me this game.

It’s an important game because there will be money raised for children’s charities.

“To play and be involved in the squad, see some old team-mates and Gareth Southgate, and some of the coaching staff, will be a great moment.

“To pull on the England jersey again in front of the fans will be a way of me to say thank you for the support they’ve shown me over my time playing for England.”
