Arsene Wenger is set to try and bring in either Chris Smalling, Virgil Van Dijk, or Ron Vlaar, to boost his defensive options.

The Arsenal manager seems forced to buy a central defender in the January window, following injuries and poor performances from his current crop of defenders at the club.

And having sold Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona for £15 million in the summer, Wenger will be reduced to just £20 million in transfer funds.

Arsenal are likely to try and convince one of the trio of Chris Smalling, Virgil Van Dijk, or Ron Vlaar to move to the Emirates Stadium.

The three central defenders have all previously been targets for the Gunners, Vlaar and Van Dijk especially.

Celtic man Van Dijk has previously opened up about wanting Champions League football, with Arsenal ready to do a deal.

Meanwhile, Ron Vlaar, currently of Aston Villa, is entering the final year of his current deal at Villa Park. Manchester United defender Chris Smalling has also been a target for Arsenal.
