Chelsea are facing the prospect of star players Thibaut Courtois and Eden Hazard’s contracts running down, with the Belgian pair’s deals at Stamford Bridge running until 2019 and 2020 respectively.
Antonio Conte has sent a message to the club’s board, asking them to tie up their renewals soon or face losing two of their best places on the cheap or even on free transfers.
Courtois in particular has been hesitant to sign a new deal and supposedly wants a sizeable pay increase to stay at Chelsea. Real Madrid are reportedly interested in the stopper.
Hazard is another player supposedly on los Blancos radar, and although he has a year longer on his contract, he has been the Blues talisman this season and they will want to tie him down sooner rather than later.
“I think the club knows very well the importance of these two players and I think they are very happy to play for this club.” said Conte after the win against Newcastle on Sunday.
“I hope that Thibaut will sign his contract. And Eden to sign as well before the World Cup? For sure, I will be very happy when they can have this deal.”
Conte has clashed with the club’s hierarchy before over contract issues and will hope that this doesn’t escalate into a bigger issue. The Blues are currently looking for a new Director of Football after Michael Emenalo left in November.
