5. Leon Goretzka (Schalke)

Schalke youngster Leon Goretzka is a free agent in the summer and has attracted interest from a number of top European clubs. The German international could be a like for like replacement for Philippe Coutinho who is expected to leave. Goretzka’s power and physical prowess suggest that he would fit nicely in the Premier League. This is one that Liverpool should be all over given that he is available for free, but they will have plenty of competition for his signature.

4. Stefan de Vrij (Lazio)

Defensive reinforcements should be the priority for Liverpool in the winter given the problems they have had this season. Lazio’s Stefan de Vrij is one name that has been mentioned. The Dutch international is also a free agent in the summer and is stalling on a new contract as apparently he wants any potential deal to include a £22million release clause. Primarily a centre-back, De Vrij can also play at right-back and would be a useful addition to Jurgen Klopp’s side, although Juventus are also said to be interested.

3. Timo Werner (RB Leipzig)

Aside from in defence, Liverpool also lack a reliable centre-forward with Jurgen Klopp more commonly opting to play Roberto Firmino as a false nine. However, he could use his knowledge of the German market to try and bring Timo Werner to the club from RB Leipzig. The 21 year-old powerhouse scored 21 Bundesliga goals last season for the newly promoted side as they finished second to Bayern Munich. Back in March, he told Bild that it would be ‘special’ to play for Liverpool one day.

2. Thomas Lemar (Monaco)

Liverpool were close to signing Thomas Lemar from Monaco towards the end of the summer transfer window, but in the end the deal fell through. However, they are expected to go back in for the France international when the market re-opens. Lemar is a class act on the wing and at just 22 he has plenty of room to improve still. Monaco may also now be willing to accept less than the £74million that the Reds reportedly offered back in August now that they look to be heading out of the Champions League.

1. Virgin van Dijk (Southampton)

It was the soap opera that lasted all summer and eventually ended in disappointment for Virgil van Dijk, as Southampton refused to grant him his wish to move to Liverpool. Like with Lemar though, the Reds will surely revive their interest in him once the transfer window re-opens. Their need for a centre-back of his quality is more urgent than ever given their recent defensive form. Van Dijk is back in favour at Southampton after originally going on strike, but their poor start to the season could pressure them into selling.
