Chris Smalling almost joined Arsenal five years ago before opting for Old Trafford
Manchester United defender Chris Smalling admitted he came close to joining Arsenal after they showed strong interest.
The England centre-back was playing for Fulham in 2010 when the North London club announced he was a transfer target.
In the end, Smalling chose Manchester over London and joined United for £11million five years ago and he believes he made the right decision.
Smalling said: “There was interest from Arsenal but I’m happy to be where I am now.
“This year I’ve definitely got more consistency, it’s something I needed to add to my game.”
The former Maidstone United player has been one of United’s standout performers so far this campaign and has also spoken highly of another star performer in Anthony Martial.
“He [Martial] has added that injection of unpredictability up front, where he can turn players and run at them – I’m definitely happy I’m not facing him!
“I play against him in training and I know he’s a handful. He’s probably the one forward I’d stick at the top of the list of who I woudn’t want to play against at the moment.”
