The Gunners only gave Iwobi a new contract in October

Nigeria striker Alex Iwobi has agreed a new £30,000-a-week deal with Arsenal, that will keep him at the club until 2021.

Arsene Wenger has introduced the 19-year-old to the first team this season, and has been repaid for his faith in him with some impressive performances this season – notably at the Camp Nou, against Barcelona in the Champions League.

In October, the striker – who can also play as a winger – was given a new £10,000-a-week deal, to keep him at the club until 2019. But with the club impressed with how he has progressed, they were keen to tie him down to a long-term deal.

Since the start of the year, Iwobi has been a regular fixture in the Arsenal starting XI – as Wenger’s side make a late push for the Premier League title, although that looks highly unlikely.

Finding the net

And while Iwobi may have scored only two goals for Arsenal this campaign, either side of the international break – against Everton and Watford – Wenger knows the Nigerian has goals in him.

Iwobi has played much of the campaign playing on the wing, behind first choice strikers Olivier Giroud and Danny Welbeck.

While Welbeck was out for large periods of the season injured, Wenger was heavily reliant on Giroud. But with Iwobi having risen through the ranks, pressure on the Frenchman to bring in a striker over the summer has been eased.
