The United boss has hinted he will remain at Old Trafford

Manchester United boss Louis Van Gaal believes will still be at Old Trafford next season, despite Jose Mourinho being linked with the managerial position.

Speculation over the Dutchman’s future has raised significantly in recent months, since Mourinho was sacked by Chelsea back in December, with suggestions that the Portuguese could take over at United in the summer.

It was thought that the former Real and Inter boss had agreed a deal to join the club, however, reports of a deal have since been quashed, and Van Gaal is feeling positive about his future at the helm.

“Of course they knew it would be hard. That is why they hired me. We spoke about that at the start and we have a process of three years.” said Van Gaal. “I [wanted] to sign for two years, they want three years, not I,

“I have signed for three years so next year you see me again!”

Van Gaal understands importance

United are currently sixth, after West Ham won away to West Brom on Saturday afternoon, meaning they have a game in hand against the team directly above them. But they are still five points adrift of rivals Manchester City, who occupy the last Champions League place.

And Van Gaal insists he knows how important Europe’s elite club competition is to the club, and is feeling positive about the large task at hand.

“I am a realistic man and I only speak about facts. There are a lot of positives but now we are one position less than last year and that position is very important for the club, the most important position.” said Van Gaal.

“I’m always having that positive feeling because I have done it at every club and I’m here to do that for his club.”

The FA Cup presents itself as the last chance for United to grab silverware this season, after having beaten Everton to the final, where they will face Crystal Palace.

And the few positives from a season that saw the Red Devils kicked out of the Champions League at the group stages, includes the emergence of young talents such as Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard and Andreas Pereira as first-team regulars.

The board have yet to confirm that Van Gaal will still be in charge next season, while Mourinho is keen to get back into management as soon as possible, and preferably in England.
