Richards reveals truth behind rigid Mancini regime

Former Manchester City defender Micah Richards has revealed details about his term with Mancini.

Mancini would constantly overwork the team and get angry – as per Richards. Mancini was in charge of Manchester City for three seasons and gave the citizens their first ever Premier League title in 2012. However, his reign proved to be a bit too much for some players – and that included Micah Richards.

Richards said: “[Roberto] Mancini shook it up real. We were doing double-training days, sometimes training at six or seven o’clock at night. He [Roberto Mancini] said, ‘If you don’t want to be here, you can go. If you’re going to be here, work hard. I don’t care who you are, how many caps you’ve got, if you’re not playing well in training, then you’re not going to get a shirt.’

“We respected him because he brought us home the Premier League. But the next season, it got a little too much. He was such a good coach and perfectionist, if you didn’t get it perfectly right, he would take it to heart and sometimes he would go a little personal. For me personally, he was the best coach I’ve ever worked with!”
