We are already underway in the 2019/20 season. With three months gone, certain players have lived up to their standards while some others have disappointed with heir craft.

This summer saw a bunch of high-profile transfers taking place. A marquee transfer comes with loads of expectations that the player has to live upto. Unfortunately, some players have failed to live up to that billing this season.

Let’s have a look at five such players who have failed to impress their new clubs.

5. Eden Hazard

Probably one of the longest-running transfer sagas of this decade, Real Madrid finally managed to sign Eden Hazard from Chelsea in a whopping £100m deal this summer. Lod Blancos had a below-par 2018/19 campaign and were hoping to replace the departed Cristiano Ronaldo this season with a man worthy of filling his boots, which is why they signed the Belgian.

Hazard, however, has looked like a shadow of his former self at the Bernabeu. Make no mistake, Los Blancos are perched at the top of the LaLiga table, but a mammoth credit goes to Gareth Bale for that.

Hazard has managed to score only 1 goal and dish out 1 assist in his first six games for Real Madrid. Also, his career in Spain has been blighted by injuries, which is why he has looked unimpressive as of late.4. Antoine Griezmann

If Real Madrid landed Eden Hazard, Barcelona also answered them well by signing one of their own long-sought targets in Antoine Griezmann. The French marksman joined the Catalans in a £120m deal but has yet to reach the expected heights.

Grizou has notched 3 goals in 9 games but is yet to fully hit his peak at his new surroundings. He has shown flashes of his brilliance. Also, he is yet to form the deadly combination with Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi that people have been expecting him to.

It is clear that the Frenchman will have to work harder to cement a place in Ernesto Valverde’s starting lineup.

3. Harry Maguire

Manchester United finally landed a world-class center-back in Harry Maguire, who also happened to be one of their top targets to improve their ailing defence. However, the £85m star has done little to do what he was expected to, it seems.

Even with Maguire on their side, United have conceded 8 goals in nine games, not to mention that they are currently placed 12th in the Premier League table with 8 points from 9 games.

Defensive errors have clesrly been a concern for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and even though Maguire himself hasn’t committed any silly mistakes, the overall result does reflect badly on his reputation and the things expected of him.2. Nicolas Pepe

Nicolas Pepe was the only man apart from Lionel Messi to notch double figures in both goals and assists last season. The Frenchman scored 22 goals and dished out 11 assists, earning interest from a host of top clubs in Europe.

Arsenal managed to sign the 22-year-old in an €80m deal, making him the most expensive signing of the club. Pepe, however, has hardly repaid that trust.

The French attacker has found it hard to settle in the Premier League. He as scored one goal amd dished out only 2 assists in his first 10 games for Arsenal, which is alarming at its best.
Also, it becomes embarrassing to know that his only goal came from a penalty against Aston Villa.1. Matthijs de Ligt

Matthijs de Ligt was probably the most sought player in the transfer window this summer. Juventus emerged winners in the frey when they landed him in a £65m deal from Ajax.

However, hailed as a once-in-a-generation talent, de Ligt has hardly succeeded in replicating his good form from last season at the Allianz stadium. The Dutch defender endured a horrific debut, scoring an own goal after 10 minutes against Inter Milan. Then again, he has committed a large number of mistakes and has been sidelined for the same.

He also had a torrid time in Juve’s 4-3 victory against Napoli and was an unused substitute against Parma in Juve’s Serie A opener. He has played 7 times for the Italian champions, but that’s more due to the fact that Chiellini has been injured since August.
