Lionel Messi In Conversation With Barcelona About New Contract

Barcelona sporting director, Eric Abidal confirmed that Lionel Messi is in conversation with the club about a new contract.

The Argentine forward turned 32 this year and also added the FIFA Men’s Player Of The Year award to his long list of individual honours.

He has struck 8 goals in 7 La Liga matches this season and 12 in 16 games across all competitions. He continues to be Barcelona’s best attacking outlet and one of the best players in the world. Messi’s current deal is set to run till the summer of 2021 but Abidal hopes to secure his future for longer.

“They are already talking,” he told Mundo Deportivo. “I do not know if we will have news soon because the decision will depend on the player, but for us as a club I hope it is sorted as soon as possible.”

Asked about when he could expect for the deal to be struck, Abidal said, “It will be known when it is known, but I am positive.” The Frenchman also revealed that impressive Barcelona youngster, Ansu Fati is also in line for a contract extension. He added, “We are also talking to him. He is a young player that we have to protect. We have to talk to his family and representatives.”
