Liverpool are considering a termination of Javier Manquillo’s loan-deal from Atletico Madrid just halfway through the initial agreement.
The Reds signed the Spaniard last summer on a two-year loan deal from the La Liga giants, but after failing to impress during his first year at Anfield, Brendan Rodgers could send him back to Spain a year early.
According to reports, Portuguese side Benfica are interested in signing the right-back and are hoping Liverpool do in fact terminate the loan so that they can strike an agreement with Atletico over the summer.
The 21-year-old made 10 league appearances for Rodgers‘ side, and started his career in England off well, but slowly faded away and was eventually cut from the first-team.
Manquillo failed to make a single Premier League appearance in 2015 and could now be sent back by Rodgers, with Benfica eyeing a deal for the Spaniard.
The full-back was dropped when Rodgers changed to a back-three, but even when a right-back was needed, the manager opted for Glen Johnson or even Emre Can over the loanee.
Liverpool have been busy in the transfer market already, signing five players, and according to reports, Nathaniel Clyne from Southampton could be a sixth arrival this summer, which would mean Manquillo’s first-team status would be further damaged.
The Reds have already had a £10million bid turned down by Southampton, but they are thought to be considering a new bid worth around £15m.
