Team of the Week following Game-week Six

After yet another thrilling weekend in the Premier League, it’s time for SillySeason to give their Team of the Week.

The weekend of action got underway in controversial fashion during Saturday’s lunch-time kick-off, which saw Chelsea beat London rivals Arsenal 2-0.

The 3pm kick-offs also provided some great excitement, with Watford dumping more misery onto Steve McClaren‘s Newcastle United, and Claudio Ranieri‘s Leicester City came from 2-0 down once again to pick up a point at Stoke City.

In the late kick-off, West Ham United continued to shock the giants of the Premier League as they beat Manchester City 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium.

Sunday’s games saw wins for Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United, while Liverpool were held to a point at home to Norwich City.

So who stood out for their performances this weekend?

Here is SillySeason’s Team of the Week

Goalkeeper – David de Gea – Manchester United

Would it be cliche to say this was signing of the summer?

Keeping David de Gea could be massive for Manchester United, and getting him to sign a four-year deal is even better.

The Spaniard was on top form yet again against Southampton and made two world-class saves to deny Graziano Pello and Sadio Mane.

Real Madrid will still be gutted they missed out on this guy, but as for United, he could once again be vital for them throughout the campaign.

Centre-Back – Winston Reid – West Ham United

The West Ham shock-train keeps on rolling.

Wins at Emirates, Anfield and now the Etihad Stadium. Unreal form from Slaven Bilic‘s men.

After picking up a 2-1 win against Manchester City on Saturday, a lot of praise was heaped upon Bilic and his men, but for us it was Winston Reid that stood out.

Rock solid at the back once again and proving to be a massive part of the Hammers‘ side.

They’ll be grateful they fended off Arsenal a couple of years ago.

Centre-Back – Kurt Zouma – Chelsea

Kurt Zouma makes the team for his breakthrough goal against Arsenal on Saturday.

The big Frenchman was perfectly found by Cesc Fabregas and he headered home past former-Blue Petr Cech.

The goal brought a massive sigh of relief around Stamford Bridge, who were playing against 10-men following Gabriel Paulista‘s dismissal.

Are Chelsea finally seeing into the future with Zouma playing regularly?

Centre-Back – Russel Martin – Norwich City

You’ve probably seen the image going around social media about Russel Martin‘s hectic weekend.

Well if you haven’t, he had to drive from Liverpool back to Norwich to see the birth of his son, before flying back to Liverpool with the club’s directors and then scoring the leveler for the Canaries against Brendan Rodgers‘ men at Anfield.

In truth, Martin actually had a poor game and was guilty for Danny Ings‘ goal after needlessly giving away possession, but after scoring the equaliser, he certainly made up for his error.

A very successful day for the Scottish defender.

Right-Midfield – Riyad Mahrez

When does this guy not make Team of the Week these days?

What a season he is having so far and he shone once again for Leicester City at the weekend against Stoke City.

After going 2-0 down for a second week in the row, it looked like the Foxes were finally set to lose again, but once again they came from behind and picked up a point this time.

Riyad Mahrez obviously netted one for Claudio Ranieri‘s men and also got an assist for the second as well.

Another stunning game-week for the Egyptian.

Centre-Midfield – Matt Ritchie – AFC Bournemouth

When you score a contender for Goal of the Season, you deserve to be in Team of the Week.

Matt Ritchie scored one of the best volleyed goals in the Premier League when he struck the ball from outside of the box and into the top-corner.

The technique and the ability to pull it off is unreal and simply for that stunning goal, he takes a place in our Team of the Week.

Unbelievable tekkers.

Centre-Midfield – Dimitri Payet – West Ham United

What a signing he’s been.

After his match-winning brace against Newcastle United, Dimitri Payet backed it up once again with a fine performance against Manchester City.

An assist to his name and just another stand-out display for the Hammers.

A great signing for Slaven Bilic.

Left-Midfield – Victor Moses – West Ham United

Agent Moses the Chelsea fans are calling him.

Well Victor Moses has been superb for West Ham United in his first few matches for them after joining on a season-long loan and his goal against Manchester City was a brilliant strike.

His pace is deadly and if he can start adding more goals to his game, he could be a real threat all season for the Hammers.

Another West Ham man in the team.

Striker – Odion Ighalo – Watford

All the talk ahead of the season was about whether Troy Deeney could cut it in the Premier League.

However, at the minute it’s Odion Ighalo who is scoring the goals for Watford and he scored a match-winning brace against Newcastle United on Saturday to dump more misery on the Magpies.

Two goals in the 2-1 away win gives the Hornets a solid start to life in the Premier League following their 1-0 home win against Swansea City last weekend.

Ighalo not the only striker to net a brace this weekend.

Striker – Graziano Pelle – Southampton

Graziano Pelle didn’t deserve to be on the losing side yesterday afternoon.

The Italian was outstanding in the first-half for Southampton, tormenting Daley Blind for nearly the whole half.

Sadly for him though he was on the end of a defeat and his two goals weren’t enough for the Saints to pick up a win at home.

His rugby celebration was also clever. We liked it.

Striker – Anthony Martial – Manchester United

The teenager who keeps on giving.

Anthony Martial has now netted three goals in just two Premier League games, and his match-winning brace against Southampton on Sunday was easily enough to get him into the team.

Both were simple finishes for the Frenchman, but he won’t care, he shown strikers instinct to be in the right place at the right time.

Martial could be a real threat for United for years to come.

So there is our 11.

What would yours be?
