The most famous and Iconic Premier League players ever to grace English football

With yet another Premier League season up and running, we’re all looking forward to seeing what the future of English football will bring. Here we will look at the most Iconic Premier League players in history.

Are we set to have another shock winner of the title like Leicester City last season? Who will be the standout team this year? Which young players will step up and become the new headline maker? Which players will make a future Iconic Premier League players list?

However, which players laid down the foundations of making this league so exciting? The classic players who we all remember so well for their huge contributions to our country’s football? Here’s a list of the top 10 footballers that were ‘iconic’ in the English Premier League. A player is eligable for this list if he is not currently playing in the Premier League and his contributions to the league seem to be over.

10) Fernando Torres – Liverpool/Chelsea

The Spaniard was signed for Liverpool by Rafa Bentiez back in 2007, and is not only remembered for his incredible goalscoring at Anfield, but his shocking form at Stamford Bridge too. After 4 trophyless seasons at Liverpool, Torres decided he did not want to wait any longer to gain some silverware and controversially moved to Stamford Bridge in January 2011. The move paved the way for Luis Suarez to join Liverpool, which the Reds will be thankful for. But Torres scored some incredible goals and created some fantastic moments during his time in England, particularly in a Red shirt (although, who could forget THAT miss vs Man United while playing for Chelsea), and that earns him a spot on this list.

9) Kolo Toure – Arsenal/Manchester City/Liverpool

Kolo Toure signed for Arsenal in 2002 after a short trial for the Gunners. He made 225 appearances, scoring 9 times and was part of the famous ‘Invincibles’ side that won the league without losing a match all season in the 2003/04 season. In 2009, rich-boys Manchester City signed him for £14million, where he enjoyed more success before moving to Liverpool on a free in 2013. Liverpool was the only club he left trophyless, although he came close to winning the league title at Anfield in 2014. He now plays under ex-Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers for Celtic up in Scotland.

8) Jamie Carragher – Liverpool

Carragher is an absolute legend for Liverpool and the Premier League. Now retired, he made a total of 508 appearances for the club at centre-back, winning 12 trophy’s during his time at Anfield, including the Champions League. Carragher formed a famous on-pitch relationship with Steven Gerrard as they enjoyed much success together.

7) Gary Neville – Manchester United

Neville was part of the famous ‘Class of ’92’ that saw an exceptional set of Manchester United players guide the club into a golden era of success in the 1990’s and into the 2000’s. He was part of the team that saw great moments such as the famous Champions League win in 1999 vs Bayern Munich, and countless league titles under Sir Alex Ferguson. He now works in the media for Sky Sports and is co-owner of Salford City FC, along with the rest of the Class of ’92. He also has an honorary doctorate from Salford University, acquired in 2014.

6) Steven Gerrard – Liverpool

The greatest legend that Liverpool have ever produced, the career of Steven Gerrard is an incredible one. He won countless trophies in a Reds shirt, including the Champions League, but in the end missed out on the greatest prize of all, a league title. His goals over the years were outstanding and his contribution to his team matches that of any player in Premier League history. He left Anfield in 2015 with an emotional farewell to the team.

5) Paul Scholes – Manchester United

Paul Scholes was a fantastic player who once again was one of the ‘Class of ’92’. He is one of the most Iconic Premier League players ever. Scholes was praised by Gary Neville as the only man who could completely control the tempo of a football match while on the pitch. The fans loved him and he upon his initial retirement, he missed playing so much, he came out of retirement in 2012. His return lead to another league title for United in 2013.

4) Frank Lampard – Chelsea

Frank Lampard arrived at Chelsea from West Ham in 2001 for what seems like a bargain £11million. In his 13 year stay, he became Chelsea’s all-time leading goalscorer, while also winning everything on offer for him to win, making 429 appearances. He is considered as one of the most Iconic Premier League players in history, After he finished at Chelsea, he spent a short spell at Manchester City and now plays in the USA for New York City FC, who are owned by the same group as City.

3) David Beckham – Manchester United

David Beckham is possibly the most famous footballer of all time, but internationally became well known probably after his Manchester United career, more during his time at Real Madrid and LA Galaxy. He also won many trophies at Old Trafford and was remembered for his superb free-kicks and goals for the team. One particular goal that stands out was the opening day goal against Wimbledon where Beckham lobbed his opposing goalkeeper from his won half, a goal that will be forever remembered.

2) Thierry Henry – Arsenal

Thierry Henry was an absolute God for Arsenal, another member of the 2004 ‘Invincibles’ team and one of the most famous faces to make it out of the Premier League. He scored 174 goals in 254 appearances (their record goalscorer) and only failed to win the Champions League while at Arsenal (which he later on at Barcelona in 2009). He’s also the French National team record goalscorer too, and scored some incredible goals in an Arsenal shirt.

2) Alan Shearer – Blackburn Rovers/Newcastle United

Alan Shearer is Newcastle’s and the Premier League’s all-time top goalscorer. He arrived at Blackburn from Southampton in 1992 for £3.6million. This is where his success story began, as the Blackburn team, managed by Kenny Dalglish, famously won the league title in 1996 and lifted it at Anfield. Later that year, Shearer became the world’s most expensive player at the time when he moved to Newcastle for £15million. He scored countless goals and eventually became remembered for his ‘hand in the air’ celebration.

1) Ryan Giggs – Manchester United

Ryan Giggs is one of football’s all-time greats. Giggs captained the team on numerous occasions, particularly in the 2007–08 season when regular captain Gary Neville was ruled out with various injuries. He made 652 appearances at Old Trafford and got 114 goals. Legend.
