5. Ruud Gullit- Defender, Forward, Midfielder


Played professionally in the 1980s and 1990s as a midfielder or forward. He was the captain of the Netherlands national team that was victorious at UEFA Euro 1988 and was also a member of the squad for the 1990 FIFA World Cup and Euro 1992.

At club level, in 1987 he moved from PSV to Milan for a world record transfer fee. Easily recognizable with his distinctive dreadlocks, he was part of the famed Dutch trio at Milan which included Marco van Basten and Frank Rijkaard. Gullit won three Serie A titles and two European Cups with Milan. In 1996.

4. Franco Baresi – Defender

He is considered one of the greatest defenders of all time, and was ranked 19th in World Soccer’s list of the 100 greatest players of the twentieth century.  He won the Champions League 3 times, as well as 6 Serie A titles, 4 Supercoppa Italiana titles, 2 European Super Cups and 2 Intercontinental Cups.

With Italy, he won the 1982 FIFA World Cup. He also played in the 1990 FIFA World Cup where he was named in the FIFA World Cup All-Star Team. At the 1994 FIFA World Cup he was named Italy’s captain and was an integral part of the team that reached the final. Although he would miss a penalty in the resulting shoot-out, as Brazil lifted the trophy. Baresi also represented Italy at two UEFA European Championships, in 1980 and 1988, and at the 1984 Olympics.

3. Diego Maradona – Forward, Midfielder

An odd addition as Diego was in better form in the 80’s. However his popularity grew in the 90’s and was a prominent player for his country. Maradona captained Argentina in the 1990 World Cup in Italy to yet another World Cup final. An ankle injury affected his overall performance, and he was much less dominant than four years earlier. After losing their opening game to Cameroon at the San Siro in Milan, Argentina were almost eliminated. They only qualified in third position from their group. In the round of 16 match against Brazil in Turin, Claudio Caniggia scored the only goal after being set up by Maradona.

Played for Ajax and Milan, as well as the Netherlands national team, in the 1980s and early ’90s as a forward. Van Basten is regarded as one of the greatest European forwards and one of the greatest footballers of all time. He scored 300 goals in his career, but played his last game in 1993 at the age of 28. This was due to an injury that forced his retirement two years later.  Marco Van Basten was later the head coach of Ajax and the Netherlands national team.

Maldini spent all 25 seasons of his career in the Serie A with Milan. And he retired at the age of 41 in 2009.  The defender won 23 trophies with Milan while in the squad: the UEFA Champions League five times, seven Serie A titles, one Coppa Italia, three Supercoppa Italiana titles, four European Super Cups, two Intercontinental Cups and one FIFA Club World Cup.
