5. GUS CAESAR (Arsenal)

Nick Hornby summed him up perfectly was quoted saying “… painfully, obviously, out of his depth … he looked like a rabbit frozen to the spot … and then he starts to thrash about, horribly and pitifully…”.

4. MARCO BOOGERS (West Ham United)

Harry Redknapp who bought the Dutch striker didn’t even look at this player before signing him. This was a lesson learnt the hard way for Harry as he was soon sent off after coming on as a substitute for a chest-high challenge on Manchester United’s Gary Neville. He went on to make a total of just four appearances for West Ham.

3. BENJAMIN TELECHEA ( UE Lleida )

Benjamin Telechea spent one season in top flight football in Spain as a defender and his team conceded 134 goals in 30 games losing 23 of those matches.

2. MASSIMO TAIBI (Manchester United)

He cost £4.5 million and was supposed to replace Peter Schmeichel at Manchester United. However,  the tracksuit wearing goalkeeper was useless. And he famously let Matt Le Tissier’s timid shot go into the goal which is still one of the biggest blunders committed by a Manchester United goalkeeper

1. ALI DIA (Southampton)

This no doubt one of the best stories in history of sports.  Ali Dia’s friend had called up the Southampton manager Graeme Souness at the time. And he actually convinced him that it was the legendary striker George Weah on the other end and that Ali Dia was his cousin! He said he played for French side Paris Saint Germain and also had 13 International appearances for his country Senegal.

It gets funnier. They convinced Souness in 52 minutes and Dia was given a one-month contract.

Ali Dia went onto make his debut as a substitute, replacing Matt le Tissier. Finally, Dia was substituted off in the 85th minute and that was his final and only match for Southampton.
