The Dutchman is closing in on a transfer to Anfield

Newcastle United midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum will undergo a medical at Liverpool on Friday, ahead of a proposed £25 million move to Anfield.

The 25-year-old will end his one-year stay at St James’ Park, after the Magpies’ relegation to the Championship, as he goes in search of Premier League football.

Wijnaldum’s arrival on Merseyside is set to be confirmed either by the end of Friday or over the weekend, with personal terms still understood be in negotiation.

He will become Jurgen Klopp’s sixth signing, since his arrival at the club last October. While Sadio Mane will remain Klopp’s most expensive signing, after the former Southampton star’s recent £34 million arrival, with defender Ragnar Klavan having arrived earlier this week.

Wijnaldum netted 11 times for Newcastle last season, and is now anxiously looking for a move away from the north east, following their relegation, and his brother was also caught posting an imposed picture of Wijnaldum in a Liverpool shirt, on his Twitter page.

Liverpool will pay £23 million up front, with add ons seeing that fee potentially rise to £25 million, based on player and club-related achievements.

The midfielder will then link up with his new teammates in America, providing the deal goes through as planned.

Wijnaldum featured for the Magpies for the final time last night, as he came for a 10-minute appearance against League One side Doncaster Rovers
