Tottenham Hotspur have pulled out of the race to sign Michy Batshuayi in favour of Basel striker Breel Embolo.

Marseille’s in-demand hitman was thought to be at the top of Mauricio Pochettino’s target list for the summer. However, Spurs’ refusal to offer the Belgium international a regular role ahead of Harry Kane leaves a deal unlikely.

Switzerland international Embolo is three years younger than Batshuayi, 22, and expected to be more comfortable with a lesser role at White Hart Lane, in a bid to fight for a place. Pochettino is said to want to increase his firepower for next season in preparation for Champion’s league football and perhaps another push for their first Premier League title.

Embolo caught a number of clubs eyes after scoring 29 goals in all competitions for Basel this season, and Tottenham are leading the charge.

However, a spanner in the works could come in the form of Manchester United, who are also said to be keeping close tabs on the 19-year-old though, who has nine Switzerland caps under his belt. The North-West club have been scouting the 6ft 1in striker for some time, and according to the Manchester Evening News, Embolo would cost in the region of £20million.

The teenager would be a cheaper alternative to Batshuayi, as Marseille reportedly value the forward at £31.5m.

After West Ham United had a £31.5m bid for Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette rejected, they have set their sights on Batshuayi, who now  remains high on their target list, with Dimitri Payet said to be a good friend from their time together at Marseille.
