Jose Mourinho Scapegoats – Top 10

We look at some of the excuses Mourinho has made throughout his managerial career- typical Jose Mourinho scapegoats.

Jose Mourinho is a born-winner. He has proven that throughout his career as success has followed him at every club he’s been at. However, he is simply the worst loser in football. We look at some of the top Jose Mourinho scapegoats.

Top 10 Jose Mourinho scapegoats

A lot of fans say he’s bought his success because he’s only managed the richest clubs in each league. It’s true in regards to Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Chelsea, however he did win the Champions League with FC Porto and that’s an incredible achievement.

However, when things don’t go Mourinho‘s way, it never seems to be his fault.

Mourinho would simply never admit he is wrong. He would never say his team selection was wrong. It will also be because of something interfering with the game.

also, he has publicly criticized other coaches such as his nemesis Chelsea coach Antonio Conte while also publicly blaming his own players such as Luke Shaw or Paul Pogba. So here we have done a top Jose Mourinho Scapegoats list, as we thought we’d put together the best 10 excuses he’s come up with after losing matches.

Enjoy.

10. Club Doctors

We thought of past Jose Mourinho scapegoats on this list such as when he was managing Chelsea.

Mourinho was livid with Chelsea team doctor Eva Caneiro rushed on the pitch back in 2015/16 when Eden Hazard was down injured. This meant that Hazard had to go off injured, making Chelsea play with eight players while chasing a game. To be fair, the physio checked on an injured player.

Yes that’s what happened. Eden Hazard was down injured and needed treatment, cue Eva Caneiro running onto the pitch to check up on the Belgium.

Mourinho flipped out as it meant Chelsea would be down to eight-men with Hazard leaving the field of play to be treated on.

After the game, Mourinho had this to say about his medical team: “My medical department left me with eight fit outfield players in a counter attack after a set piece and we were worried we didn’t have enough players left.”

He then accused Caneiro of not understanding the game and being a distraction.

She has since been in legal proceedings with Chelsea over unfair treatment and dismissal.

9. The Floodlights

Jose Mourinho accused the man controlling the floodlights as the reason for his team not scoring.

Chelsea eventually beat Queens Park Rangers back in 2014, but Mourinho said his team didn’t score sooner because it was too dark and the floodlights should have been on.

The former Blues boss said: “I think the man responsible for the lights was in the same mood as the crowd, because everybody was sleeping. He took 20 minutes to understand that it was dark.”

8. The Fans

‘Mourinho’s right, your fans are s***e’. Heard that chant?

Well away fans used to sing it frequently at Stamford Bridge, when Mourinho was the Blues boss, after Jose Mourinho launched a scathing attack on the Chelsea’s home support.

Following a tough home win, Mourinho accused the fans of not being loud enough and not making it feel like a home game.

He said: “At this moment it’s difficult for us to play at home though, because playing here is like playing in an empty stadium. I was today looking around and it was empty, but not in terms of people because it was obviously full. That’s what is frustrating.”

And Mourinho has done the exact same thing at Old Trafford since becoming Manchester United manager. He has critiscised the atmosphere at Old Trafford and claimed the fans were’t giving their full support.

He said recently:”I think Old Trafford, in spite of being a quiet stadium, the pitch is big, the grass is nice and obviously the players feel very comfortable playing here.
“In here, the atmosphere is a bit quiet and there is not very (much enthusiasm).”

The fans are often one of the most used Jose Mourinho scapegoats.

7. The Board

Jose Mourinho’s former relationship with Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich was always a bit edgy, and it came to an end when The Special One was sacked for the second time by the Russian owner in the 2015/16 season after a dismal season languishing in the middle  of the table.

And in a famous rant from the past as Chelsea manager,  Mourinho started talking about eggs in a supermarket and how to make the best omelette. The Chelsea boss was angry that the club refused to support him financially so that he could sign a striker. This lead to him ranting about eggs and omelettes.

The full quote reads: “It depends on the quality of the eggs. In the supermarket you have class one, two or class three eggs and some are more expensive than others and some give you better omelettes. So when the class one eggs are in Waitrose and you cannot go there, you have a problem.”

And since then, at United, Mourinho has reportedly clashed with Manchester United vice chief executive Ed Woodward over transfers and money. Mourinho has been unhappy with the club’s inability to sign certain stars.

6. The Media

The media has been one Mourinho’s favourite scapegoats throughout his career as manager of top clubs.

While at Chelsea, Jose Mourinho often accused the media of having a campaign against Chelsea.

The Chelsea boss was fined £25,000 for his comments about the media, but that didn’t stop him as he appeared on Goals on Sunday to continue his argument.

Mourinho highlighted poor refereeing and then continued to slam the media for starting a campaign against Chelsea.

So in Mourinho’s eyes, his team were losing because of the media……

And since then, at United, Mourinho has often stated that the media have been overly critical of stars such Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku.

The media is a well known Jose Mourinho scapegoat.

5. The Pitch

This tactic is one of his typical Jose Mourinho scapegoats when he was in charge of Real Madrid.

Sure pitches can play a massive part in games, but Mourinho went all the way and blamed the pitch for Real Madrid’s poor start to a campaign.

Following a 3-0 win over Espanyol, Mourinho said: “The play was not good but I’m satisfied. The team was tired, we were up against a rival with nothing to lose and we were playing on a potato field.”

A few days after, the Bernabeu had a new pitch laid.

4. The Fixture List

Once again during his time in Spain with Real Madrid, Jose Mourinho actually accused other teams of controlling the fixture list and the schedule. Incredibly, fixture lists are often a well used Jose Mourinho scapegoats.

After Madrid lost to Real Betis, Mourinho launched a ridiculous rant accusing other teams of deciding when games are played and stated that they had full control of the calenders.

He said: “It’s obvious that other teams are controlling the calendar. They are laughing behind my back.”

Vintage Mourinho.

3. Opponents

The famous Jose Mourinho mind-games.

He always puts more pressure on opponents by saying his side are the under-dogs in the match.

Those of you who watch and understand football, it’s very rare that Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Chelsea can be classed as underdogs. Even FC Porto were never really underdogs unless it was in Europe. And even at Manchester United, he has also adopted an underdogs persona against other top teams.

With Mourinho at the helm, he will somehow convince you that his team shouldn’t win.

2. Buses

Who’s a fan of irony?!

The man who invented the tactic ‘park the bus’ was left fuming when Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United did the same back to him, leaving his former Chelsea side with poor results.

Mourinho is known for parking the bus against big opposition. He will play three holding-midfielders and just tell his team to sit back and take the point.

However, when Big Sam did that at Stamford Bridge, Mourinho was livid after the game. The park the bus accusation is now a well known Jose Mourinho scapegoats at Manchester United as his team tries to score.

He said: “This is not Premier League, this is not the best league in the world. The only thing I could bring was a Black and Decker to destroy the wall. A football match is about two teams playing and this match was only one team playing and another team not playing.”

A 0-0 draw with Spurs, lead to Mourinho saying this: “Tottenham might as well have put the team bus in front of their goal. Sometimes when you area big club, a very small club comes to your stadium. Tottenham got a point they shouldn’t. We wanted to play.”

Irony.

1. The Referees

The old classic. Blame the referee.

Jose Mourinho does this A LOT. It’s his classic Jose Mourinho scapegoats if Chelsea didn’t win or Manchester United, Real Madrid, Porto, Inter etc.

Lets give you some famous quotes from ‘The Special One’ after seeing his side drop points.

“I can only remember one decision all season which went in our favour. Now I am risking my dugout in the (Capital One Cup) final because I am having this conversation.

“I speak about these incidents week after week, because they happen week after week. My players are not getting the respect they deserve and it is too much.”

In one instance, he counted out certain minutes in a match to highlight the referees poor decisions and he also refused to talk completely following his side’s 1-0 loss to Aston Villa.

Mourinho just doesn’t rate referees it seems.

So there you have it. The 10 reasons why Jose Mourinho loses. Whether it’s an imagined outside force in his mind, or the pitch or opponents or his players etc. It’s usually never Mourinho’s fault his team loses.
